Daraspa – Sunlight Dreams (Agara Music)

After hearing the quality and uniqueness of Daraspa’s first two releases on Sound Avenue I was highly intrigued as to what he would do next. The Dutch producer’s latest release comes courtesy of Travis MacDonald’s Agara Music. The Canadian imprint has somewhat quietly compiled a very impressive discography over the course of its 18 month existence. Daraspa’s unique brand of melodic tech house seems perfect for Agara’s music policy so I was quite excited when this promo was added to the website. ‘Sunlight Dreams’ is Daraspa’s first EP for Agara Music and it comes with two brand new original productions along with remixes from: Travis MacDonald and Alex Villanueva.

It’s always interesting to see how a producer’s sound evolves or if it does at all. After listening to Daraspa’s two latest works here I can say that there is certainly some magic happening in the Dutch producer’s studio. The sparkling melodies that flow through both ‘Sunlight Dreams’ and the cleverly titled ‘Thekro’ are a breath of fresh air. The former boasts one of the grooviest bass lines of Daraspa’s career and the celestial sounding pads are the perfect companion to the glowing harmonies which further tantalize your senses. ‘Thekro’ on the other hand offers a more spacious groove and decidedly techier framework to complement the sun-drenched harmonies which again are the star of the show. Both ‘Sunlight Dreams’ and ‘Thekro’ show Daraspa exploring new melodic territory and the results are quite inspiring. Massively inspiring in fact.

The lone remix of ‘Sunlight Dreams’ comes from Agara boss Travis MacDonald. I would guess most electronic music fans wished Travis had a touch more production output as he seems to always deliver something unique, fresh and impeccably produced. His ‘Sunlight Dreams’ interpretation once again showcases Travis’ exquisite production detail. With a wonderfully reworked rollercoaster groove and a luminous sequence of alluring keys I have to say this is not only one of Travis’ most satisfying productions to date but also one of his most dance floor worthy as well.

The lone remix of ‘Thekro’ is provided by Alex Villanueva who is making his debut on Agara Music. The Mexican producer has continued to be one of his country’s most exciting electronic musicians. Whether it be solo or in conjunction with sometime studio partner Kaban Alex always brings an exceptional level of quality to his productions. Alex’s ‘Thekro’ interpretation proves to be a great complement to Daraspa’s original as it downplays many of the melodic clusters and focuses on more of a serene atmospheric approach. The strength of the groove along with additional rhythms and strong percussive elements make it a more than worthy dance floor companion to Daraspa’s original. Agara Music label boss Travis MacDonald has hit the nail on the head with this one again and Daraspa continues to show that all the hype surrounding his debut release just 6 months ago was totally warranted. Highly Recommended.
