Fer J – Moments (Soundteller Records)

Deersky’s Soundteller Records continues it’s phenomenal start to the year with a new EP from fresh face Fer J.

Fer J - Moments (Soundteller Records)

Hailing from Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, Joao Ferraz aka Fer J has a short but very interesting discography. Two electronica style releases on Medrado Music along with a more club oriented one on Plano B have been really impressive. Now we see the Brazilian stepping up for the most anticipated release of his career in form of a 3 track EP entitled ‘Moments’.

The chugging grooves of ‘Hide and Seek’ get the EP off to a great start. Clattering drums and cross-cultural themes play heavily here all while a glowing atmospheric backdrop slowly builds into the main break. Warm chords bring a cinematic flair and once the framework slowly decays it’s an incredibly emotional moment. There’s something hopeful resonating from this one and it feels like a well scripted story even at a mammoth running time of nearly 11 minutes. Stellar track from Fer J.

The EP’s second selection ‘Let Me Go’ again showcases that amazing organic percussion and a very similar emotive feel at the outset. Sweeping vocals add a new dimension as the piece progresses and a delicate piano complements them wonderfully. What makes the track for me is the drum work though, not aggressive at all but the organic qualities are quite impactful and a gorgeous third act is certainly a beautiful touch.

The release concludes with ‘Rapture’ which is perhaps the most traditional (in a progressive sense) sounding piece on the collection. It’s chugging groove is very much in line with what’s playing so well in the Beatport charts at the moment and a squirrelly arp gives it a distinctly modern feel. Again clocking in at nearly ten minutes, Fer crafts an amazing story that never drags and the main break is certainly the most mystical moment on the EP. This release was a surprise in a way and will certainly have the progressive new school talking about Fer J. Great signing by Deersky and another killer release from his Soundteller Records imprint. Highly Recommended.
