Flying Point – You My Seventh Feeling (Animate Dummy)

Flying Point returns to his own Animate Dummy label for ‘You My Seventh Feeling’, accompanied by a remix from Unlayr.

Flying Point’s original is a slice of deeply melancholic melodic techno, full of metallic sounds, heavy bass tones, mournful synths, and abstract chimes. The breakdown is beautifully hazy and trippy, and the melody lines that emerge from it combine with new layers to give the track an emotional finale. My only complaint, and this is true of a lot of music in this genre, is that the track doesn’t offer DJs much of an intro or outro to mix, so it’s harder than it might have been to find other tracks that it works with. Still, it’s worth the effort.

Unlayr’s remix is a bit more percussive and stripped back to begin with, but it soon serves up rumbling basses and novel twists on Flying Point’s melodic ideas, before dropping into a long, moody breakdown. There are some good melodic ideas here, and the breakdown works nicely, but I found the percussion sounds a bit busy and cluttered in a way that detracted from the remix’s power – I definitely preferred the original of the two.

Fans of melodic techno/neo-trance sounds will find an intelligent and well-executed example here from Flying Point – check it out!
