Sahar Z and Chicola – Smoothy Moody/They Made Me Do It (Lost & Found)

Following up a terrific release from Brian Cid, Guy J’s Lost & Found is back with a double-header from two further examples of Israel’s finest, Sahar Z and Chicola.

‘Smoothy Moody’ serves up smoky deep house, with a low-slung bassline, funky snare rolls, and the occasional flare of dubby reverberation. Things hot up even further after a few minutes, with a breakdown introducing a simple but catchy ascending and descending melody which successfully adds a touch of lightness to the track. The relentless, irresistible bassline, terrific sound design, and cool dynamics all combine to make this a strange but wonderful treat, which manages not to overstay its welcome despite an 11-minute running time.

‘They Made Me Do It’ shows off the duo’s techier side, as they take aim squarely at the dancefloor with a hypnotic bassline, firing percussion, and cleverly time bleeps and effects that really pull the track along. The main hook is again really simple, and Sahar Z and Chicola use it very sparingly, but they really make each time count, making this a very satisfying trip indeed.

This is terrific stuff from Sahar Z and Chicola, offering two superior slices of forward-thinking house music. 8.5/10
