12 Questions Episode 14: d-phrag

The 14th episode of 12 Questions features well known DJ / Producer Ivan Phillipov aka d-phrag. In addition to being one of friskyRadio‘s most popular DJs d-phrag is half of the much loved Napalm & d-phrag production duo. Together the pair have appeared on nearly 100 releases in the last year and a half and top notch imprints like 3rd Avenue, Balkan Connection and Bonzai  regularly release their productions. This week sees the release of Napalm & d-phrag‘s remix of Shane Robinson ‘Don’t Believe in Reality’ on Sleepless Nights Recordings.

1. If you had to pick one track which solidified your love for electronic music early on what would it be?

d-phrag: That would be a tough question to answer with just one track… But the one that still gives me immense chills is Loafer – Travelogue [Hope Recordings] circa 2001.

2. What was your first and last DJ gig?

d-phrag: My first gig was on September 22, 2008 in a beach club La Playa in Varna, Bulgaria – we actually expected a sunny weather and lots of people, but it was quite cold and rainy, all speakers that normally have been placed outside on the beach have been stacked just 3 meters from the DJ booth, as you can imagine , I didn’t needed a monitor speaker. By the end of the night, my ears were hurting badly, but the thrill was immense. As for my last gig, it was few weeks agon in a small local club in my hometown Plovdiv, with friends – no more than 40 people, but we had a great time.

3. What was the first and last record you purchased?

d-phrag: Actually, I cannot recall what would be the first record I purchased, maybe Way Out West – Intensify album. The last was Dosem – Message [Suara]

4. What would you say is the highlight of your career thus far?

d-phrag: Probably my 2 gigs in Ukraine in 2010 and the two in Belarus in 2011. I was stunned to see my mugshot on a big ass billboard in Ukraine, they know how to advertise guest artists. And of course, the warmest audience in the whole world!!! On a producer’s side – it would be when Hernan Cattaneo charted our remix of qoob feat Amber Long – Australia.

5. Tell us something about yourself that might surprise people?

d-phrag: That’s tough one…I’m very open and straightforward person (sometimes not for my own good, I guess I talk too much sometimes). Well, I guess it would be that when I was a teenager I was into studying birds, that was a passion and a hobby 🙂 I know, not much of a surprise.

6. Who are some of the best undiscovered talents in your eyes?

d-phrag: I would say Alejandro Arroyo, but thanks to Mark Betteridge and CHANGE Audio he is not that undiscovered anymore, I see a great future for this young talent. The other one would be someone who I proudly claim to discover myself – Sarkis Egiazaryan aka Kissoff, I already booked him for few remixes and 2 upcoming releases on Balkan Connection Tech and BC2.

7. Which producers consistently inspire you?

d-phrag: Definitely Dosem, Quivver and Hot Since 82, those never ever cease to amaze me.

8. What artist or track would you love to remix? and who would you love to be remixed by?

d-phrag: Well, as for me remixing favorite artists, I’m a little hesitant – the ones I admire do such perfect tracks, I’m not sure I’d be able to complement their originals with something equally good. As for being remixed – I’d love to be remixed by Rodrigo Matteo, Ioan Gamboa or Luis Bondio.

9. Record labels are a dime a dozen these days and the majority of people feel most of them are mediocre music factories. Which ones if any standout for you?

d-phrag: Dave Seaman & Steve Parry’s Selador, their latest “The Selador Showcase, Edition 1” is simply amazing. Another label that constantly delivers interesting new names is Stellar Fountain, Gyorgy is such a great A&R besides being a great producer. Would again mention Suara and Kanzleramt.

10. What would you say is the best mix compilation of all time?

d-phrag: Global Underground Moscow – Deep Dish

11. Current Favourites (you can list more than one per category if you like)

Food: Chinese
Drink: Sobieski Vodka
Drug: I don’t do drugs, only the bad habit of smoking
Animal: Don’t have animals
TV Show: Game of Thrones, Fargo, Good Wife
Movie: Twelve Monkeys, Brasil.
Video Game: I don’t play video games 🙂
Album: Crystal Method – Vegas
Track / Song: Napalm & d-phrag – Substance (Matter Remix). Matt Doyle really turned our original into something absolutely brilliant!!!!
Producer / Band: Alejandro Arroyo, Andre Sobota
Record Label: BC2 (I know, shame on me, but I’m really enjoying being an A&R for this label)
Nightclub: Can’t think of any, really.
DJ: Hot Since 82

12. If the final DJ/live set of your career was next week what would your last track be?

d-phrag: Dirty Vegas – Days Go By

Napalm & d-phrag’s remix of Shane Robinson ‘Don’t Believe in Reality’ is out now on Sleepless Nights Recordings, you can purchase those releases: here
