The eighteenth installment of our 12 Questions segment features Lonya Koval aka Lonya. 12-questions-lonya

Lonya: First I must say that it was pretty hard to answer , and not even one answer is conclusive , so here we go

1. If you had to pick one track which solidified your love for electronic music early on what would it be?

Lonya: Wow , actually so many to mention , but definitely Danny Tenaglia feat Liz Torres ‘Turn Me On’ and Laurent Garnier ‘The Man with the Red Face’ must be in the list

2. What was your first and last DJ gig?

Lonya: It seems obvious that any dj should remember his first gig , so how come that I don’t ? maybe something is wrong with me 🙂 , but i don’t honestly . and yesterday I played two gigs , 8 hours in total , my back is killing me , so at the moment it feels like these were the last ones for me and I shouldn’t do it anymore , but this feeling will pass towards the night hours I m sure 🙂

3. What was the first and last record you purchased?

Lonya: If I remember correctly The Beatles ‘ A Hard Day’s Night ‘ when I was a boy 8-9 , or even before and the last one ? well I m still playing it , it’s my secret weapon , cant reveal just yet …

4. What would you say is the highlight of your career thus far?

Lonya: I guess there were few , the recent one was my Resident Solo Night at The Cat & Dog , its became a tradition in the club already , my turn was this May and I succeeded to create the magic that night , which was so important for me , 7 hours passed like 10 min , and people still talk to me about what they felt and how spiritual it was.

5. Tell us something about yourself that might surprise people?

Lonya: I’ve despised everything about being a dj and electronic music when i was young in the 90s , back then I was committed to the guitar and heavy distortion riffs 🙂

6. Who are some of the best undiscovered talents in your eyes?

Lonya: There are so many to mention , really and I don’t want to forget anyone , but I have to say that I have a student which is 13 years old ! that is doing unbelievable stuff , during the lessons I sometimes forget who is the teacher and who is the student , he is really outstanding and time will tell

7. Which producers consistently inspire you?

Lonya: My friend Chaim always inspires me ,each time he plays to me his new ideas and the stuff he is working on I feel it and want immediately to open a new project and dive into it. hope he won’t read this though.

8. What artist or track would you love to remix? and who would you love to be remixed by?

Lonya: There is a track that Chaim just finished called Underwater that i love and wish to get my hands dirty with and a spectacular track by Audio Junkies still in the making ,which I don’t think even has a name ,but has musical parts that will blow you away.

9. Record labels are a dime a dozen these days and the majority of people feel most of them are mediocre music factories. Which ones if any standout for you?

Lonya: No one really stands out at the moment , and this is not a bad thing , just the opposite , I like the variety and the unexpected . there are a lot of labels that make outstanding releases , and I don’t think we should complain on the quality of music , maybe only on the financial side of things

10. What would you say is the best mix compilation of all time?

Lonya: So many really influenced me , but the ones I’ll listen now , will be different from what i do musically myself , so I can go on a complete different journey , Dixon’s Body Language Vol 4 is a good example

11. Current Favourites (you can list more than one per category if you like)

Lonya: I really like what Wehbba is doing , also Solee , Eelke Kleijn, Marc Poppcke , Andre Sobota , Dj Tennis just released an amazing mini album Local, I bumped on it accidentally and felt it just after couple of seconds.

Food: Humus & Sushi
Drink: Disaronno Amaretto
Drug: Advil
Animal: Cat
TV Show: Game of Thrones
Movie: Shutter Island
Video Game: really don’t have time for games 🙂
Album: Jazzanova – In Between
Track / Song: Jimi Hendrix Purple Haze
Producer / Band: Quincy Jones
Record Label: Asymmetric
Nightclub: The Cat & Dog
DJ: Hernan Cattaneo

12. If the final DJ/live set of your career was next week what would your last track be?
