12 Questions Episode 2: Stas Drive

The second installment of our 12 Questions segment features a good friend of ours Stas Drive. The Ukrainian producer was undoubtedly one of the more talked about producers in 2013. Stas Drive delivered countless productions that earned club, radio and chart support from Hernan Cattaneo and Guy J. There was something about Stas Drive’s smooth hypnotic sound that caught the attention of the two storied DJs and it’s made Stas Drive one of the more in demand remixers of the moment.  He’s got a new EP out this week on Nikko.Z’s ‘Dopamine Music’ and a remix on Tash’s Movement Recordings. Check our ‘Essential Purchases’ section for reviews of those.

1. If you had to pick one track which solidified your love for electronic music early on what would it be?

Stas Drive: There are several tracks, but definitely it will be Shmuel Flash – ‘Chilling moments’ or Starecase – ‘Aishiteru’

2. What was your first and last DJ gig?

Stas Drive: I have spent a lot of time on discos in second part of 90’s and was try to play there, therefore I don’t remember the first one, but my first professional performance in a club has been in the most popular one at the time club, named ‘Disco 2000’ from my native city Kharkov , back in 1999. The last party with me was in Decadance House with Kolombo, on the 25th of January 2014.

3. What was the first and last record you purchased?

Stas Drive: There have been my two first vinyl’s Fortunato & Montresor – Imagine 1997 and DJ Sneak – Keep On Groovin 1998 . The last it’s Martin Buttrich – Earth of Foxes [Supplement facts]

4. What would you say is the highlight of your career thus far?

Stas Drive: Self-knowledge and the study of various sound synthesis. From my early childhood I was fond of the so-called space music: ambient, dub or some other deep sound. It’s all my childhood with Kraftwerk, Zodiac, Space, Brian Eno, F.S.O.L., Boards Of Canada, Orb, Aphex Twin etc. Today, in spite of my past creation – I would always use my favorite sounds, to one degree or another, as my sound signature! I am a great supporter of innovation! I don’t like to dwell on something that I have long understood. The more that becomes available to everyone.

5. Tell us something about yourself that might surprise people?

Stas Drive: I find it difficult to talk about myself and I am not usually accustomed to do it. It is better if people could tell something about me. I think that it’s much better! But there is a little secret which almost no one knows in Record-business and music world as a whole: this is my other side of life – yoga as a lifestyle and my outlook and the deep studying of quantum physics.

6. Who are some of the best undiscovered talents in your eyes?

Stas Drive: I don’t know … really! I could say about those guys who you already know but if we are talking about is not known, but some of those most interesting to me, are my Russian friends, the duo St.Savor who have produced a beautiful EP on Hernan’s ‘Sudbeat Music’ in 2013. I can confidently tell that soon you will hear a lot about them!

7. Which producers consistently inspire you?

Stas Drive: 100% it’s Sebastian Mullaert (Minilogue), Carbon Based Lifeforms, Desert Dwellers, Burial, Guy Gerber, Mathew Jonson, Guy J, Henry Saiz, Guy Mantzur, and if not to touch electronic music, then I’m a fan of Pharrell Williams 🙂 I like what he does !

8. What artist or track would you love to remix? And who would you love to be remixed by?

Stas Drive: I would like to do something with De Phazz – ‘Roses’ but I think the original will always remain unsurpassed! And of course now working on Shmuel Flash ‘Chilling Moments’, I want to leave in it the most important part and give it a more fresh – my own personal musical touch ! As for remixers …hmm.. I don’t have favorites, because many artists are good in their own way.

9. Record labels are a dime a dozen these days and the majority of people feel most of them are mediocre music factories. Which ones if any standout for you?

Stas Drive: Yes sure, there are a lot of record labels everywhere today. I like some great labels, but I think that the best ones from my view point, have always been Renaissance, Bedrock and Cocoon… and it’s not surprising.

10. What would you say is the best mix compilation of all time?

Stas Drive: Kazell guest mix for John Digweed’ s 100Kiss (11.02.2001.) Until now rarely I can listen it.

11. Current Favourites (you can list more than one per category if you like)

Food: seafood
Drink: a lot of green tea – ideal for permanent work in the studio
Drug: Just music with a pure mind
Animal: Cat & Dog 🙂 , Dolphins
TV Show: Late Night with Jimmy Fallon
Movie: I prefer only documentaries about the universe
Video Game: Super Mario Bros :))
Album: ‘Fabric 64’ – Guy Gerber and Guy J ‘1000 Words’ (Bedrock)
Track / Song: Nathan Fake – ‘The sky was pink’, Remy Shand – ‘Burning Bridges’
Producer / Band: Minilogue
Record Label: Cocoon
Nightclub: very difficult to say … no favorites
DJ: Sven Vath, Guy Gerber

12. If the final DJ/live set of your career was next week what would your last track be?

Stas Drive: For sure my ‘Apotheosis’ for Lost & Found and our joint track with Mike Griego ‘ Savannah’

Stas Drive’s ‘Twin Souls / Arcturians’ is out now on Dopamine Music, you can purchase the release: here
