The 62nd episode of our 12 Questions segment features producer Matias Vila.
1. If you had to pick one track which solidified your love for electronic music early on what would it be?
Thanks to my father and his collection of cassettes and vinyl, I started listening to Vangelis, Jean Michel Jarre and Kraftwerk, but it was in the summer of 2003 when I walk to Ibiza with my brothers, we put a set of Hernan Cattaneo where sounded “Silence” Delerium, the remix of Sasha & John Digweed’s voice Sarah Mclachlan carrying me, then showed me a live set, also of Hernan, one of the best parties in the world Moonpark Buenos Aires, an unforgettable set, then hear “Forget the world “John Creamer & Stephane K – I love this track, after mixing it with another of my favorite” Hear what was said “Mooncat feat Ferank, I also remember another classic era” Move Yo “Matthew Delay & Norman Soares! these last 2 I’ve remixed with support from Sound Avene and an excellent job in mastering Travis MacDonald, for free download in a few days, a few months later a friend gives me GU Toronto cd1 025 Deep Dish, this set is perfect from beginning to end, choose a track here is difficult, but I emphasize “Flying” version of Valentino Sultan & The Greak, I really frame the Progressive from 2001 to 2005, so I would have to choose several.
2. What was your first and last DJ gig?
The first was in 2004 in a clothing store in a shopping center in Alicante, where he worked one of my best friends, was very nervous at that time had a few meals at home with the belt he had prepared the session and out perfect, but the store had a Technics and at first I could not control the pitch, but all went well, was loud, like a club, the guys who were working saw clients dancing and I think a good atmosphere, it was a nice experience. The last, in Barcelona, party “Religion” a group of extraordinary people offering a quality proposal in the electronic scene in Barcelona that night shared a cabin with phenomena like Simple Things Project and my talented friend Miko who is hitting very strong in the halls of Barcelona, Nightlife hill, Andrea Cassino & Danny Loyd, with an amazing Live, was a great night.
3. What was the first and last record you purchased?
The first vinyl I bought was “Sheet One” Plastikman, in a store, which is now a cult electronic club called Artespiritu Alicante, impact me much, the last was in digital Sudbeat – Volume 2, great selection.
4. What would you say is the highlight of your career thus far?
I would say that is the present, know that people enjoy what I do and see artists I admire my tracks using is very rewarding.
5. Tell us something about yourself that might surprise people?
Not if they will be surprised, 2 years I have lived with my girlfriend (my best friend) in a village between the Pyrenees, where we collaborate on organic farming, collect water from a natural source, bake and cook bread in a wood stove that we have restored . I can also tell you that before producing electronic music, accompanied on guitar and vocals to a great musician, Pablo della Santa acted in a bar in Palma de Mallorca, we played covers of pop bands and rock, also some melodic theme of the time, this etapa juice very important for me, I think it quite reflected in the EP “Buen Dia”.
6. Who are some of the best undiscovered talents in your eyes?
Today there are very good producers, music evolves very fast and even more electronics, there are great musicians who for various reasons have not released many tracks but soon know them, I can appoint Jorgk that with MartyON made a excellent remix my track “Volviendo al Principio” edited by 3rd Avenue … I recommend listening to .
7. Which producers consistently inspire you?
My influences are varied, which inspired me and still do are Vangelis, Jean Michel Jarre and Kraftwerk, to Soda Stereo, Dire Straits, Pink Floyd or Depeche Mode, now I hear there are producers who inspire me too much as Alberto Blanco, Graziano Raffa, Madloch, Hernán Cattaneo, Nick Warren, Marcelo Paladini, Nicolas Ruiz, Mariano Mellino, Martin Garcia Franco Bianco, Marcelo Vasami, , Lliz Cirelli, Minilogue, Nicolas Jaar y Tale of us.
8. What artist or track would you love to remix? and who would you love to be remixed by?
I did a remix “Private Investigations” by Dire Straits, and is fulfilling a dream for me, listened to my father and now me small transports that time, I love it. I’d be remixed by Minilogue, a shame to have separated a few months ago I saw “As Human As Possible” its pre-separation documentary admire his philosophy, both tracks as in life, in my ears were the first to fuse minimal melodies, would be an honor to work with them.
9. Record labels are a dime a dozen these days and the majority of people feel most of them are mediocre music factories. Which ones if any standout for you?
Sound Avenue & their sub Labels, and Sudbeat, Dominique Heyninck and his team are doing a great job with their labels, Dominique takes good care of the details, it is a great professional and a pleasure to work with on Sound Avenue there are incredible musicians, is the case of Daraspa, Tero Civill or the same Madloch few days ago I ended a ‘”Remix Contest” “Han Haak in which there is very good material, I found excellent producers, I really like Phonic Scoupe that finished second in the -“contest-” and by Sudbeat, I think Hernan Cattaneo and Graziano Raffa are bringing the Progressive House where it should be, taking bombs one after another, also feature Music to Please Friends, very good label, which is bringing sounds very freshness.
