The 87th episode of our 12 Questions segment features UK producer Andrew Best.
1. If you had to pick one track which solidified your love for electronic music early on what would it be?
The Prodigy – Everybody In The Place My eldest sister’s friend at the time passed down a few warehouse rave cassettes and this track was on there and got me hooked. That’s how it all started!
2. What was your first and last DJ gig?
First was at a local under 18’s Happy Hardcore night in 1996 when I was 14. Going straight from DJ’ing in my bedroom on belt drive decks to mixing on 1210’s with no monitor in a club was an experience! The last was in April this year Playing alongside Funk D’Void at You Belong, Newcastle.
3. What was the first and last record you purchased?
First: Kinetic Pleasure – Get The Feeling [Evolution Records 1994]
Last: Happy Mondays – Step On (Original Press) I had the pleasure of being on 808 State’s guest list when they supported Happy Mondays recently and couldn’t miss the opportunity of getting a vinyl signed by the band…the geek in me!!!
4. What would you say is the highlight of your career thus far?
Playing alongside Dave Seaman and Funk D’Void at a night I co promote and play as resident at, You Belong has to be up there definitely. Getting my first vinyl release on Danny Howell’s mix for the Renaissance Masters series CD was also a proud moment.
5. Tell us something about yourself that might surprise people?
I have starred in two British films, Billy Elliot and Purely Belter……As an extra!!
6. Who are some of the best undiscovered talents in your eyes?
He is not so undiscovered nowadays as he is making big waves in the scene but Erik Lake is bound for big things! Redsparrow has bundles of talent and is only young so has great potential. Definitely one to watch. There is a wealth of talented producers in our scene who contribute excellent music so keep it going!
7. Which producers consistently inspire you?
I’m lucky enough to have worked with and to be currently working with Chris Scott (Echomen/Lexicon Avenue). He is a big influence on me musically and a great friend and mentor in the studio. I’m constantly learning from someone who has vast knowledge and experience in the industry which is a good thing. People like Fur Coat, Edu Imbernon and Alex Niggemann are also constantly inspiring me with the sounds and techniques they use in their production.
8.What artist or track would you love to remix? and who would you love to be remixed by?
Hmmm!!…I’d love to remix a track by any of the above! And to remix me I’d have to go for Sasha or Hot Since 82. I think they’d do a pretty good job!
9. Record labels are a dime a dozen these days and the majority of people feel most of them are mediocre music factories. Which ones if any standout for you?
There are certainly a lot of labels out there which for me, don’t release tracks of my taste but it’s personal preference isn’t it? One man’s medicine is another man’s poison and all that. I definitely believe in quality not quantity and we try to instil this notion here at Terminology. I’m a big supporter of Crossfrontier Audio as the tracks Marc puts out have all the right elements for me along with other well established labels like Innervisions, Suara and Get Physical. There are some excellent new labels such as Music To Please Friends, E Sound and BOSO which are releasing really good music.
10. What would you say is the best mix compilation of all time?
This is a toughy!!…I don’t think I can pin point 1 CD! As far as series go…Renaissance Masters and Global Underground nailed it for me every time.
