Benja Molina: “Staying true to my sound has allowed me to connect globally with progressive house”
After more than two decades in the electronic music scene, madrilenian producer Benja Molina continues to expand his career through releases on top labels, international performances, and growing recognition from legends like Hernán Cattaneo, Paul Thomas, Aly & Fila, and Paul Van Dyk. From his early productions to his upcoming EP on Univack Records, Benja has remained true to his signature style while keeping pace with the ever-evolving global music landscape. In this exclusive interview, he discusses his artistic journey, future plans, and the challenges facing today’s independent producers.
After more than two decades in the electronic scene, how do you keep your sound fresh and innovative while maintaining your progressive house identity?
Benja: I try to be very aware of what is happening musically outside my country. That way, I see where the sound I make is moving. I like to stay faithful to what I do without losing sight of where our style is heading in terms of influences.
Your tracks have been supported by iconic names like Hernán Cattaneo and Paul Thomas. How has this recognition influenced your career and creative direction?
Benja: It has been something magical. The first time I received a private message from Hernán, I couldn’t believe it. This recognition has continued, with recent support from Aly & Fila and Paul Van Dyk. Even though my sound is rooted in progressive house, it also resonates with trance artists, which I find important since I work on the emotional side of the music.
You’ve performed in diverse countries such as India, Argentina, and Serbia. How have these experiences shaped your artistic evolution?
Benja: These countries are the cradle of progressive house. I believe they genuinely live and vibrate with this style. For those of us who play this sound, it’s enriching to contribute to this global network and connect with audiences in such passionate scenes.
Could you tell us about your upcoming Endless Night / Ammonite / Siroco EP on Univack and the creative process behind your collaboration with N-TCHBL?
Benja: Each of these tracks tells a different story, but they are all connected. For “Endless Night,” I already had the lyrics written, but I needed the perfect voice to bring them to life. I spoke with N-TCHBL and encouraged her to give it a try. Amazingly, by the end of the same day, she had recorded vocals that surprised me completely. I knew her voice would be perfect because she had done voiceovers for my radio show before. From there, I built the track around the lyrics, and I think we achieved something really special.
As the host of the Horizon Of Sounds radio show, how do you curate new music for your audience?
Benja: I receive a lot of promo material from various labels every week through different channels. I listen to absolutely everything, and from that process, I select tracks for the monthly show.
What challenges do you think independent producers face in today’s industry, and what advice would you give them?
Benja: I believe one of the biggest challenges is the musical oversaturation in the market. Labels release new tracks every week, which can be overwhelming. The creative process itself is not as much of a challenge as standing out in this constant wave of new music.
What are your plans for 2025 in terms of new releases and performances?
Benja: On the production side, I’ll continue working with leading labels and collaborate with an artist who has been a reference for a long time. In terms of performances, I’m planning to play in northern Spain and Madrid in the coming months. I’m also exploring the possibility of doing something in Asia.
