Audioglider – Devil and the Deep Blue Sea/Calm Crystal Clear (Hype Muzik)

Cementing a relationship with the StrippedMuzikClub family of labels, Audioglider follows up a pair of remixes for Stripped Digital with a double-header of indie-dance/chill-out crossover numbers on Hype Muzik.

‘Devil and the Deep Blue Sea’ opens with a gentle plucked guitar and housey rhythm section leading to chugging key-changes and intricate synth arrangements. The breakdown turns up the shoe-gaze factor before letting the acoustic guitar come to the fore again, while the second half of the track is brighter in tone, with trancey melodies, uplifting chord changes, and washes of vocals, which play the track out.

‘Calm Crystal Clear’ opens with rich percussion and more drifting vocal sounds, before introducing its catchy wooden hook. The breakdown lets gleaming synths creep in underneath that hook, pulling the track into a more energetic second half, where some gentle sweeping melody lines create a lovely finale around the six-minute mark. I could have done without some of the slightly harsh vocal samples that punctuate the track, but they didn’t spoil the overall effect for me.

This is a lovely EP from Audioglider, boasting a ton of well-realized melodic ideas and clever arrangements. ‘Calm Crystal Clear’ appealed slightly more of the two, but both are well worth checking out. 7.5/10
