Ajmal – Freak (Clinique Recordings)

The 91st release on Clinique Recordings sees the return of one of India’s brightest electronic music talents Ajmal.

Ajmal Khan aka Ajmal last appeared on the Russian imprint in June of this year with a remix of Robert R. Hardy’s ‘Infinitely Glamourous’. His biggest release of 2014 though may have been for the UK’s mighty Baroque Records back in February. It’s been four long months since we’ve seen a new original from Ajmal so his latest entitled ‘Freak’ is much anticipated.

Ajmal’s production’s always have a keen nose for the dance floor and ‘Freak’ is no different. It’s tight, percussive groove and moody atmospherics’ create a great vibe early on. A well shaped bass line with some wicked modulation carves out a brooding underbelly and a set of smooth harmonic tones adds just the right melodic sensibility. The overall restraint in terms of the production is what really stands out though. There are some very strong elements here and Ajmal has allowed them to shine without doing too much. Excellent original from Ajmal.

The first remix is provided by Kaan Koray who is making his first appearance on Clinique Recordings. The Turkish producer has been quiet this year with just one remix on Stellar Fountain so his appearance here is a much welcome one. For his ‘Freak’ interpretation Kaan has focused more on the underlying melodic nature of the original and added a full Indian vocal which conjures up memories of many progressive house classics. The spiritual vibes on the track are undeniable and that Luzon-like clattering percussion seems to be the perfect fit. Great remix from Kaan.

The second and final remix is provided by Phonic Scoupe who are making their debut on Clinique Recordings. The Lithuanian trio have been one of the most talked about production teams of the year and their recent appearances on 238 West, Soundteller Records and Stripped Recordings have more than backed up the hype. For their ‘Freak’ interpretation Phonic Scoupe have provided a spooky rework which oddly enough falls just before all the impending Halloween gigs. The lead themes have been monumentally tweaked and continue to build and release tension throughout the mix. It makes for an exhilarating ride and also the standout on the release. Another all round great offering from Clinique Recordings who continue to push the underground forward.
