The latest release on Tim Penner’s Slideways Music welcomes Alfonso Muchacho to the label for his debut EP.
The UK based producer really opened my eyes and ears with his ‘Echo Peak’ EP earlier this year. Released courtesy of 3rd Avenue the three track collection showcased a musicality and emotion which made it one of my favourite releases during the Spring season. Now as the year is winding to a close we see Alfonso making his Slideways debut with ‘Code’.
Alfonso’s diversity really shows on the first and title track ‘Code’, as it comes in deeper and more hypnotic than his aforementioned ‘Echo Peak’ EP. Trippy, trailing effects combined with a deep, chugging groove and soft tonal motifs make for a gorgeous vibe all throughout the first act. A darker, more ominous atmosphere comes over the piece as it strips down with ease into a transient section which preludes a brief but effective break. It brings the pulsating foundation back along with some hopeful pads which make for an even more intriguing third act. It hits home on a variety of emotional levels, making it extraordinarily powerful, and Alfonso’s swing heavy groove keeps it locked on the floor as well.
The companion piece ‘Lights Go Down’ finds Alfonso crafting something a bit more direct and distinctive. Strong rhythmic elements and a wicked vocal stab set the piece in motion, while a squirrelly tone and nice drum fills build tension over the first act. The main break is perhaps the track’s strongest suit, with a bassy motif and new found vocal elements, which carry a cross cultural vibe to an extent. It makes for a very powerful conclusion and the standout on the EP for me without question. No doubt Alfonso is underrated and he’s proven that here once again with two quality tracks aimed for the darker floors. A great signing for Tim Penner and Slideways Music which follows up their Gateway Series release quite nicely. Don’t miss it.
