Travis MacDonald‘s Agara Music returns this week following what was one of my favourite releases on the label. Travis’ two collaborations with Belgian producer Max Cue were absolutely sensational and left fans of the label wanting more. It’s been two long months since the aforementioned collaboration but it’s been well worth wait as Agara’s new release is finally here. I’m always curious to see what comes next on this fine Canadian imprint as Travis has some of the most astute ears around. The 16th overall release on the label features the debut of AMAN and his latest single entitled ‘Tears of the Lotus‘ which includes a remix from Jaap Lighart.
AMAN’s recent productions for Soundteller, 3rd Avenue and Liquid Grooves have been quite cool and there always seems to be something mystical about his productions. The Indian producers latest studio creation ‘Tears of the Lotus’ begins with some very well crafted beats and an ever-evolving ambiance. The layered kicks give the groove a nice hop and once the trailing effects dissipate the rhythmic claps just further the energetic pulse of the track. The flickering hypnotics and faint chord changes carry the track in to the main break where things intensify just a touch. A new melodic hook is introduced which works perfectly with the glassy vortex of keys. It sets up a mesmerizing conclusion to the record which stays quite elegant and refreshingly laid back. Excellent stuff from AMAN.
The lone remix on the release comes from Jaap Lighart who is making his first appearance on Agara. The Dutch producer is much loved for his many bootleg reworks along with official releases on MNL, LuPS Records, Baroque and Aurium Recordings. For his ‘Tears of the Lotus’ interpretation Jaap has overhauled the track into something much tougher and more tech house oriented. In making great use of the original elements Jaap has managed to keep the mystical feeling of the track while making it much more accessible to the dance floor. A tension filled breakdown and bass heavy payoff highlight the records climax and is just the icing on the cake for what is one of Jaap’s best remixes to date. Outstanding stuff from Agara Music once again.
