Electronic music is more than just beats and drops, it’s a portal to something deeper. With HAUMS’ latest album, Squaring The Circle, he invites listeners on a sonic odyssey that blends philosophy, spirituality, and raw emotion. Through hypnotic rhythms and immersive soundscapes, the album explores the tension between the infinite and the finite, the structured and the boundless.
Featuring standout singles like “Awake Me” and “Lost on Mars”, ‘Squaring The Circle isn’t just an album—it’s a transformative experience. “Awake Me” serves as the call to adventure, a moment of awakening that shakes the listener from complacency. “Lost on Mars” captures the feeling of disconnection, the search for meaning in a world full of distractions.
With a career spanning 16 Top 100 tracks on Beatport and support from industry legends, HAUMS has mastered the balance between technical precision and emotional depth. Speaking to Change Underground, he dives into the creative process behind ‘Squaring The Circle’, the healing power of sound, and the hero’s journey that shapes the album.
“Awake Me” represents ‘The Call to Adventure’ in your album’s journey—what was your personal call to adventure that inspired this track?
At some point, we all get that little nudge—that moment where life taps you on the shoulder and whispers, “Hey, maybe there’s more to this?” Awake Me was born from my own introspective journey, a moment where I started questioning whether I was truly present in my own life or just chasing experiences. It was as if I had been living in a dream, thinking I was awake, only to realize I had barely scratched the surface of what was possible.
Musically, that first drop is meant to feel like a wake-up call—one of those moments where everything suddenly clicks… and then, chaos. Because let’s be honest, waking up isn’t always peaceful. It’s messy, disorienting, and a little uncomfortable.
Your album, Squaring The Circle, explores deep philosophical and spiritual themes. How did the concept of reconciling the infinite and the finite shape your creative process?
This album is basically my attempt to answer an impossible question: How do you live infinitely in a finite world? We all exist in this tension between the spiritual and the material, the vast unknown and the daily grind. The circle represents the infinite—the divine, the eternal, the unexplainable. The square is the finite—the structured, the known, the limitations of being human. The journey of the album is about reconciling those two forces, finding balance between them.
For me, music is where they meet. Sound is infinite—it vibrates, it moves, it transforms—but production is technical, structured, and grounded. Every track was an exploration of that push and pull. I wanted it to feel expansive, but still have form.
You’ve spoken about the healing power of electronic music frequencies. Can you share how you incorporate these elements into your production?
I’ve always been fascinated by how sound affects the body and mind. Certain frequencies can evoke emotions, shift energy, even bring a sense of peace.
In this album, I leaned into that. I used a lot of binaural beats and Solfeggio frequencies in subtle ways—not in an “I’m about to sell you a meditation course”-kind of way, but in a way that enhances the emotional depth of the music.
For example, Resist And It Persists has these deep, resonant monk chants that I was experiencing in the resistance of it all. Into the Quantum plays with the dissonance of journeying into the Quantum Field (the scientific realm of manifestation). It was really healing for me to use sound to mirror my inner experiences.
With 16 Top 100 tracks on Beatport and support from industry legends, how do you stay true to your unique sound while navigating commercial success?
Honestly? By reminding myself that nobody really knows what they’re doing—including me.
If I tried to chase trends, I’d probably be stressed out, making music I don’t even like, and still somehow miss the mark. Instead, I focus on making music that genuinely moves me. If it resonates with others, that’s a bonus.
That being said, I won’t pretend it’s always easy. When you see certain sounds blowing up, there’s always that little voice saying, “Should I just make that instead?” But every time I try to force something, it sounds… forced. So I’ve learned to trust that the right audience will find the music when I create from an authentic place.
The hero’s journey is a strong narrative structure in your album. Can you walk us through how each track reflects different stages of this transformative process?
Absolutely. The album mirrors the classic hero’s journey:
Ordinary World (Lost on Mars): The character is lost in the distractions of life—partying, chasing the next high, feeling disconnected but not knowing why.
Call to Adventure (Awake Me): He starts questioning his reality. The illusion begins to crack.
Refusal of the Call (Resist and it Persists): Resistance kicks in. Change is scary. He wrestles with doubt.
Meeting the Mentor (Power of Love): He finds a guide—someone (or something) that expands his perspective and points him toward his heart.
Crossing the Threshold (Reality): He steps into a new way of experiencing life. It’s beautiful, overwhelming, and surreal.
First Test (Steps): Doubt creeps back in. Did he make the right choice? The journey isn’t as easy as he thought.
Roadblock (Into the Quantum): His journey to quite the analytical mind so he can enter the Quantum realms. This is the battle between thinking and nothingness.
Return with the Elixir (Follow): He integrates both worlds. He doesn’t reject the material or try to transcend beyond the human experience—he embraces all of it. Darkness, light, struggle, joy. By becoming nothing, you’re able to become something.
Mindfulness, meditation, and wellbeing are central themes in Squaring The Circle. How has your own journey with these practices influenced your music?
If you told my younger self I’d be meditating daily, he’d probably laugh and take another shot.
But over time, I realized that stillness is just as powerful as movement. When I started meditating, I noticed how much noise was constantly running in my head—doubt, overthinking, distractions. Learning to sit with that changed how I create music.
Now, I see music as a form of meditation. It’s about being fully present in the process, letting the sounds guide me instead of forcing them into place.
“Awake Me” is rooted in the question: What if life isn’t a problem to be solved, but a reality to be experienced? What inspired this perspective, and how do you hope listeners will engage with it?
I spent a lot of time trying to figure out life, as if it’s a puzzle with a perfect solution. But what if it’s not something to solve—but a reality to be experienced? That shift in perspective changed a lot for me. I used to analyze everything, trying to make sense of it all. But the more present I became, the more I witnessed life unfolding perfectly. It’s as if life has always been happening for me but I wasn’t present enough to notice.
As a pioneer in the organic house genre, what draws you to its fusion of soulful, natural sounds with electronic elements?
It just feels more alive. There’s something about blending organic textures—nature sounds, real instruments, earthy percussion—with electronic production that makes the music breathe. It’s like grounding the ethereal. Also, let’s be real: there are only so many times I can hear a cold, lifeless kick drum without wanting to throw in a bird chirp or something lol.
How do you balance the technical precision of music production with the emotional and spiritual depth you aim to convey?
By making a complete mess of it first. My process is very non-linear. I’ll start with a raw, emotional idea—usually something that feels powerful but chaotic. Then comes the painful part: shaping it into something coherent without losing that initial spark. It’s like translating a dream into reality. You want to keep the magic, but you also need structure so people can actually experience it with you.
What do you hope listeners take away from Squaring The Circle—both musically and on a personal level?
All emotion fully felt is Blissss… And don’t forget what you seek is seeking you!
