Progressive House Reviews

Deepfunk – Plus/Minus (System Recordings)

US based label System Recordings has really been making their mark in the new landscape of progressive house. In the last year the label has provided electronic music fans with productions from: Verche, Cid Inc., Luis Junior, Jamie Stevens, Ian O’Donovan, Deepfunk, dPen and many other cutting edge names. This week sees much loved Maltese producer Deepfunk returning to the label for his fourth overall appearance and a new double A-side release. Deepfunk’s wave of success in recent years is well documented; his appearances on Bedrock, microCastle and Sudbeat have been spectacular and Malcolm’s own Sixtysevensuns imprint continues to be more cutting edge than ever. Deepfunk’s two newest studio productions for System are entitled ‘Plus’ and ‘Minus’.

The bassy growls of ‘Plus’ are immediately impactful and the gyrating synths in conjunction with a wicked backdrop of swirling atmospheres provides the perfect hypnotic complement. This is certainly one of Deepfunk’s bigger sounding productions of late with a grinding energy that continues to build throughout. The break is immense to say the least; full of rising tension and a crescendo that is going to go down in a total storm on the dance floor.

The companion piece entitled ‘Minus’ comes with a much deeper, more thought provoking vibe which proves to be the perfect complement to the bigger ‘Plus’. Deepfunk’s smooth and effortless sounding groove builds wonderfully with mesmerizing lines and spacey electronics leading the way. The highlight comes at around the five minute mark where the slow and deliberate groove reaches a tasteful climax that more than rivals some of Fairmont’s past gems. Two great cuts from Deepfunk and a solid EP from System. Highly Recommended. Release Promo Hype Chart Top 25
