The latest from Paul Hazendonk’s MNL imprint finds Fernando Olaya making his label debut with ‘El Santo / Street 34’.
The Colombian producer had several amazing moments in 2014 with appearances on Manual Music and Parquet Recordings being the most notable. Fernando’s warm hypnotic grooves have been a favourite of mine since I heard his The Alquimist EP on System Recordings and ‘El Santo’ and ‘Street 34’ look to be his best yet.
Some producers have a cool, effortless vibe about their work and Fernando definitely falls into that category. The warm, fluid grooves of ‘El Santo’ are quite inviting and seem almost perfect for the impending spring club season. An understated vocal loop and delicate lead motif combine for the ultimate deep house / progressive fusion. A classy sequence of chord changes following the main break makes for a goosebump inducing conclusion as the bubbly textures take you home. A magical track from Fernando.
The companion piece ‘Street 34’ finds Fernando go a touch techier with a more deliberate groove and driving percussion. Aside from the immaculate production and great energy what sets it apart is a very playful lead theme. Backed by a jangly line this cross cultural motif flows through a variety of unique twists, particularly before the main break, and to close out the third act which is quite spectacular. Two gorgeous productions from Fernando who we’ll no doubt be hearing a lot more from in 2015. Great release for Paul Hazendonk’s MNL imprint. Highly Recommended.
