Great art often emerges from the union of opposites, where differences collide to create something truly unique. For Gray Cosmo, a Turin-based techno duo, this dynamic is at the core of their music.
Alex and Andrea met in 2021 – not through music, but on the tennis courts. “We bonded over music before we even shared a studio,” they recall. That spontaneous connection grew into curiosity, experimentation, and eventually a sound that felt uniquely theirs.
Alex, a classically trained pianist, brings precision and harmony, while Andrea, a seasoned DJ from Turin’s underground scene, contributes raw energy and instinct. “Our contrast is our strength: one brings structure and harmony, the other brings instinct and raw energy. The balance between the two creates the identity of Gray Cosmo.”
The duo’s name reflects the environment of their earliest sessions. Turin’s grey winters, cold and cinematic, naturally seep into their sound, giving their tracks a subtle undercurrent of melancholy. Their music is a careful blend of emotive melodies and kinetic rhythms, guided entirely by studio intuition. “Some ideas demand space and introspection; others naturally push toward movement and tension,” they explain.
Creative tension is part of the process. “Of course we clash, and that’s exactly where the best ideas come from. We challenge each other until the track reaches a place neither of us would have found alone,” they say. This approach is evident on their ARTCORE DUO VII release with Milo Spykers, where their track Come Together balances hypnotic vocal textures with fierce bass and drum elements. “The Duo concept pushed us to lean into experimentation and create something that felt both personal and collaborative.”
In just a few short years, Gray Cosmo has ascended rapidly in the global techno scene. They’ve performed alongside icons like Indira Paganotto, Mathame, Sam Paganini, Nicole Moudaber, and Luigi Madonna, refining their approach on stage through observation and experience. “Seeing how each of them controls a crowd taught us different lessons about energy, flow, and confidence,” they reflect.
Success on the charts followed, with their Real Life EP on Joyhauser’s Memoro Recordings climbing to #11 on Beatport. The duo views this not as a signal to play it safe but as motivation to push boundaries. “It gave us validation but also motivation. Instead of playing safe, it encouraged us to take bigger creative risks.”
Collaboration remains central to their philosophy. On split EPs like ARTCORE DUO VII, they respond to other artists’ work in a kind of musical dialogue. “You’re not just making a track, you’re responding to another one. That dynamic tension pushes your creativity in new directions,” they explain. Respect, timing, and balance are critical. “You learn when to push and when to let the other person lead – that balance is what keeps the project evolving.”
Looking ahead, Gray Cosmo is exploring darker, more cinematic elements paired with intense rhythmic designs. “Expect something darker, more emotional, and more refined,” they hint, promising that their next chapter will continue to thrive on the contrasts that first brought them together under the grey skies of Turin.
