The sad news broke on social media earlier today, Thursday 21 May 2026, confirmed via Adam Beyer’s powerhouse Drumcode label, with which McKay was closely affiliated. Hailing from Glasgow, McKay emerged from the city’s fertile underground scene to establish himself as one of the UK’s most reliable architects of driving, hypnotic techno, leaving behind an authoritative musical legacy. At the time of writing, no cause of death has been disclosed.

Across his multi-decade career, McKay developed a signature sound defined by sledgehammer drums and a relentless, upfront groove, often looking to house-informed samples and loops without sacrificing systemic dancefloor urgency. His dedication to the craft was total; speaking in a 2018 interview, he laid bare his creative process, stating, “I love the dark stuff,” before revealing that he frequently spent 18 to 20 hours in the studio each day to perfect his engineering output.

From Glasgow Underground to Global Dancefloors

McKay’s professional trajectory stretches back to the early 1990s, cut from the cloth of Glasgow’s uncompromising nightlife economy. His production work began turning heads the following decade, securing early releases on vital underground institutions such as Perc’s Perc Trax and Saytek’s Cubism. He soon caught the attention of local tastemakers Slam, leading to near-countless appearances on Soma Quality Recordings, which served as a crucial launchpad for his international profile.

First landing on Drumcode in 2013 with the seminal ‘Lost’ EP, McKay became a core component of the imprint’s global sonic footprint. His 2014 release ‘Silk Road’ further solidified his standing as an elite producer, capable of delivering peak-time weapons that balanced raw, industrial power with an innate sense of soul. Beyond Drumcode and Soma, his prolific output found homes on the world’s most revered electronic labels, including Bedrock, Cocoon, Intec, Rekids, Filth on Acid, BEK, and his own imprint, Faction.

While deeply respected by dancers on international festival stages, McKay drew exceptionally high praise from fellow producers and DJs who recognized his purist approach to electronic music. Posting in response to the release of Cocoon’s 25th birthday compilation earlier this year, legendary Irish DJ Fergie singled out McKay’s contribution to the mammoth album, noting: “He’s out there on his own and always has been… In my opinion he doesn’t get the credit… But I know Harvey and he doesn’t do it for the credit.”
