RIP Kanya King MOBO Founder; The Pioneer Who Transformed British Music

Honouring the fearless pioneer Kanya King who independently shattered industry ceilings to transform British culture forever.

The international music industry is mourning the loss of Kanya King MOBO founder, who passed away peacefully in the United Kingdom on 3 June 2026 surrounded by her family and close friends. Following a determined and courageous battle with colon cancer, the iconic executive and champion of Black British music leaves behind an incomparable cultural legacy that permanently reshaped the musical landscape.

Thirty years ago, Kanya King remortgaged her home independently without institutional backing or music industry support to build a stage that would transform British culture forever. Operating as a single mother from a Kilburn council estate, she was told repeatedly that Black music was too niche, that no viable market existed, and that the industry lacked interest. Instead of arguing, she built. Six weeks later, the inaugural MOBO Awards was broadcast to the nation, ensuring nothing would ever be the same again.

What she created was never simply an awards ceremony; it was a profound act of cultural justice. The MOBO platform did not just celebrate Black music; it legitimised, amplified, and demonstrated its commercial and creative power to a world that had too often chosen not to see it.

Every artist who has stood on that stage since 1996 carries the direct imprint of her vision. Heavyweights and pioneers including Olivia Dean, Stormzy, Little Simz, RAYE, Craig David, Soul II Soul, Ms. Dynamite, So Solid Crew, Krept & Konan, Kano, Amy Winehouse, Sade, and Central Cee all benefited from the doors she forced open and the ceilings she shattered.

Her systemic impact reached hundreds of millions of people globally. She was appointed a CBE and received an Ivors Academy Honour in 2025, accepting the latter accolade in the middle of what she described as a difficult week health-wise. Characteristically, she still managed to inspire everyone in the room. She never stopped, never requested permission, and never accepted that the word no was final.

When she stood on the stage in Newcastle in February 2025, just months after her initial diagnosis, she delivered a characteristically resolute message to the audience:

“I never allowed someone to define my limits. Not in life. Not in business. And I’m certainly not going to have that happen now.”

The 2026 MOBO Awards, occurring during the organisation’s landmark 30th anniversary year, will be dedicated entirely to her memory. Every artist, every live moment, and every note will carry her enduring legacy.

The world was a profoundly better place with her in it. The industry is heartbroken but remains endlessly grateful, proud, and inspired by everything she gave to music, culture, and the generations who will follow in her footsteps.
