Krayons – Vaag EP (MNL)

Manual Music‘s more techno inspired offshoot MNL returns this week for their 3rd release of 2014. The labels second offering of the year from Olaf Stuut was just released two weeks ago and had a nice run in the Beatport Techno chart making it all the way into the top 30. For MNL’s 31st overall release Krayons makes his return for what will be his third appearance and second EP. The Dutch native made his production debut on MNL just last year with his ‘Colours’ single which showcased his unique brand of quirky melodic techno perfectly. Krayons new EP is entitled ‘Vaag’ and it comes with two brand new original productions.

The lead cut ‘Vaag’ begins with a punchy kick that slowly gets accented with a wealth of very well processed electronics. The sounds are incredibly dynamic and grab your attention right away. The funky underlay is then introduced and a wicked dance floor groove is born. The well shaped bass stabs carry a wonderful character and texture that is sure to liven up almost any set. As the main break approaches a series of sweeping electronics and subtle melodic themes soon layer the foundation. The break is short and once the re-focused groove returns it’s on onslaught of constantly evolving funky rhythms. The modulation here is incredible and just makes the groove seem that much more dynamic. A short broken beat section provides a nice interlude before the well processed beats drop back in for a very clean finish. A meticulously produced track from Krayons that definitely deserves a few plays to fully appreciate.

The companion piece ‘Regina’ is a much more straight forward sounding production. The framework comes with the super polished production that you’d respect from Krayons but this one carries a much more streamlined melodic theme. The smooth flowing lines are quite hypnotic and the glacial pads add a definite air of serenity throughout. There is a cool smoothness that the melodies create which softens the titanium coated groove perfectly. Should be a definite winner for the morning sets. Solid package from MNL with the lead track ‘Vaag’ really standing out here.
