E-Spectro and Hells Kitchen launched their Blendwerk imprint in July of this year. The labels first release from D-Mand was a resounding success. It placed in the Top 10 of our Hype Chart and earned support from Jody Wisternoff, d-phrag, Soulwerk, Gai Barone, Tash and Mehmet Akar. The labels second release is out this week and features the debut of Nic Bax to the label. His newest single is entitled ‘Sinn’ and comes with remixes from: A. Skomoroh, Michael A. and Monoart.
We first heard about German producer Nic Bax with his ‘Zeit’ release which came courtesy of Festival Lounge Limited during July of last year. Nic has been relatively quiet since with just one other release on Funnwork Records. His debut single for Blendwerk is a unique melodic techno construction with a very distinct vocal that really stands out. The tightly constructed groove is well complemented with a wide array of intricate electronics and subtle sonic sweeps. The vocal and melancholic themes are really the centre piece of the record. Both come together amazing well during a short break about two thirds of the way through. This leads to a very emotional finish with the harmonic elements intensifying along with the heartfelt vocals.
The first remix is provided by A. Skomoroh who is making his first appearance on Blendwerk. The Ukrainian producer is another one of the extremely talented crop of up and coming melodic techno producers. We loved his ‘Everything’s Become Unusual’ on Tvardovsky’s Stereo Paradise and he’s crafted a very cool remix of ‘Sinn’. The grinding groove carries some great energy and the vocals are downplayed perfect through the first half which makes their impact that much more during the first drop. The incredible elements for us though are A. Skomoroh’s spooky lines and eerie harmonics; very haunted or Halloween sounding and should create a great vibe on the right dance floor.
The second interpretation is provided by Michael A. who is also making his first appearance on Blendwerk. The Belarus based producer has really been catching our attention with his recent releases on DAR, Mistique and Stellar Fountain Deep. Michael’s ‘Intelligences’ single for Balkan Connection was one of his best pieces to date and his remix of ‘Sinn’ is quite exceptional as well. Those DJs that are looking for a dubbier approach need look no further than Michael’s remix. It’s been almost completely stripped of the vocal elements in favour of more musical themes and well textured hooks. Top remix from Michael and it’s our our favourite on the release.
Closing the package out with a fabulous electronica version is Monoart. It’s eight minutes of cool broken beats, gated rhythms, cleverly manipulated vocals and most of all real emotion. The musical themes are completely enchanting and the unique vocals work perfectly with them. Outstanding work from Monoart and a very strong second release from Blendwerk, looking forward to their third release which is coming this fall!
