orchard, cenote, deepfunk, system recordings

The latest release on System Recordings features the debut of Orchard to the label. The deep and soulful outfit’s first single for the US label is entitled ‘Cenote’ and it comes with remixes from Deepfunk, Hector Merida and F&G.

The ‘Cenote’ original leads the release off with a gorgeously crafted piano, soulful vocal elements and a well textured foundation. The sparsely laid out pianos are deeply emotional and you can feel a very subtle tension building in the underlying groove. Then the drums get dropped in and the track begins building a great vibe towards the main break. Here the full vocal is presented amidst a beautifully crafted complement of interwoven musical themes that play off each other wonderfully. The second half is as classy as it comes with the piano stabs driving the piece to an exhilarating conclusion. A hugely impressive debut for Orchard.

The first remix is supplied by Deepfunk who is returning to System for his tenth appearance. The Maltese producer is on the cusp of his highly anticipated ‘Imagination Creates Reality’ album release and also just appeared on Fairmont’s Beachcoma label with his ‘Mistakes Are Blue’ EP. Deepfunk’s interpretation of ‘Cenote’ stays true to the strong musical themes from the original all while adding a very subtle tripiness. The dubby nature of the remix allows the well textured melodies to really shine and it complements the more straight forward original very well.

The second remix is provided by Hector Merida who is making his sixth appearance on System Recordings. The Los Angeles based producer last appeared on the label with his excellent remix of Antrim’s ‘Rita’ which was released in April of this year. Hector has done a marvellous job reworking ‘Cenote’ into a deep, musical gem. His new take on the piano elements are quite inspired and he’s managed to convey the brilliance of the original over a much deeper more sultry groove. Excellent stuff from Hector.

The third and final remix is provided by F&G who are making their 10th appearance on System Recordings. The Los Angeles based producers Friendzone and Glitchd make up the F&G duo. Their genre busing sound is showcased once again here with their interpretation of ‘Cenote’. Their downtempo excursion of broken beats, lazy rhythms and emotional overtones closes out one of the most well rounded releases on System Recordings this year. Highly Recommended.
