The fourth release on the newly formed 238 West is out this week and it sees the debut of one of this year’s hottest productions teams Phonic Scoupe.
In addition to being chosen as one of the winners of the recent Sound Avenue / Han Haak remix contest the production trio has had a strong run of releases on Stripped Recordings and Stellar Fountain. Phonic Scoupe’s debut EP for the label is entitled ‘Restless Times’ and it comes with two brand new original productions.
The title track on the EP has been garnering lots of attention over the last few weeks. A definite DJ favourite and it showcases Phonic Scoupe at their absolute best. The trio’s club friendly production style is always on point but ‘Restless Times’ has an extra bit of emotional magic. It’s funky groove, wavering hypnotics and soft vocal swells are a blur of warm energy. Ultimately though it all comes down to how strong the groove is. The dynamic bass tones and smooth rhythmic elements are linked together in absolute sonic perfect. Add to that a sequence of heartfelt piano stabs and you’ve got a true dance floor smash from Phonic Scoupe. The companion piece ‘Avant Garde’ carries a similarly strong groove but presents an altogether trippier vibe. It’s shuffling rhythms are super infectious and the complement of spaced out electronics add a unique flair. Drummy builds and a myriad of killer transitions keep the energy high throughout which ultimately culminates in an exhilarating conclusion. Two very strong tracks here from Phonic Scoupe and at just four releases in 238 West would have to be a contender for one of this year’s best new progressive house labels.
