Tim Penner’s Slideways Music returns this week for a brand new collaborative project from Reiklavik & Alex Rusin.
The Polish duo are both quite established in their solo careers, collectively they’ve appeared on Saturate Audio and Majestic Family Records with recent support from Max Graham rolling in. Their debut for Slideways marks their first collaboration together and includes remixes from Solid Stone and Napalm & d-phrag.
The release gets underway with the original mix which finds the Polish pair crafting a cool progressive / techno crossover style tune. A foundation of tough beats and psychedelic inspired electronics sets a pretty menacing vibe early on. Chugging rhythms begin to build momentum as the dark, crunchy design gets a firmer grip on your senses. Haunting vocal pads and waves of electronics then lead the track into the main break. Swirling atmospheres add nicely to the anticipatory vibe before muted beats start to build tension. A gentle motif adds a classy emotional element here which sets up a gorgeous second half conclusion. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect before listening to this but it was likely something a bit more bold and direct in terms of melody so the subtlety of this surprised me and is really quite excellent.
The first interpretation of ‘Blizzard’ is provided by Solid Stone who is making his second appearance on Sildeways Music. Elias Barouche aka Solid Stone first appeared on the label with an excellent remix of Tim Penner and Amber Long ‘Forgive Me’ which was released in March of this year. In addition to appearing on Armada Music, Coldharbour Recordings and Perfecto, Solid Stone is fresh off being selected as one of the winners in the Cid Inc & Darin Epsilon ‘Outliers’ remix competition. Long revered for his breakdown crafting prowess Elias has created another beauty here. Following a first act of long swollen bass swells and electric rhythms the piece strips down into a shimmering, rumbling beast of an interlude. This one will no doubt send shivers down your spine with dark rhythmic elements and a rush of white noise preceding the beats dropping back in. I would love to see a large, up for it room go off to this one. Massive work from Solid Stone.
The second and final interpretation of ‘Blizzard’ is provided by Napalm & d-phrag who are making their first appearance on Slideways. The well known duo have been fixtures of the progressive house underground since their early work together in the last quarter of 2012. With now over 150 entries on their discography Napalm & d-phrag have been go to remixers for Balkan Connection, Bonzai Progressive and Clinique Recordings. There’s always been a techno element to many of the duos productions and their interpretation of ‘Blizzard’ is no different. With a slight reshape of the groove and a more stripped down, laid back approach Napalm and d-phrag have delivered an excellent alternative to the bigger, bolder original. The main motif is conveyed wonderfully in both the first and third acts while a more indistinct break provides the perfect emotional pause. Excellent remix from Napalm & d-phrag and a top notch offering from Tim Penner’s Slideways Music once again. Don’t miss it.
