Manual Music offshoot MNL returns this week for their 32nd overall release which features the debut of Ryan Sullivan to the label. The South African producer previously contributed a track to Manual’s ‘Manualism 4’ compilation as well as many great outings on his Triplefire Music imprint. Ryan has long been a fixture of Johannesburg’s club scene and is one of South Africa’s most well known DJs as he regularly performs the and all across the country. Ryan’s debut single for MNL is entitled ‘Your Eyes’ and it comes with a remix from Alex Preda.
Going back to Ryan’s releases on Gut Feel I’ve always thought he had a very unique production style and it’s come a long way in the last 3 or so years. ‘Your Eyes’ is a very well crafted piece of electronic music that’s got soul and a great nose for the dance floor. The musicality is very refreshing; it’s light and uplifting with an underlying emotion that the smooth vocal elements enhance quite well. The funky bottom end is well shaped and full of vibrant character which complements the effortless sounding rhythms above perfectly. The track builds nicely towards the climax which is a flurry of quirky hooks following the break that closes the record out with a huge rise in energy. It’s a great debut on MNL from Ryan and one of the best productions I’ve heard from him.
The lone remix of ‘Your Eyes’ comes from Alex Preda who is returning to MNL for his third appearance. The Romanian producer (now based in Amsterdam) also boasts appearances on MNL’s big brother Manual Music and the Dutch progressive label LuPS Recordings. Alex’s interpretation of ‘Your Eyes’ complements Ryan’s original very well as it has a deeper, more atmospheric vibe. The grooviness of the original has been recreated brilliantly by Alex which really comes through in it’s well shaped foundation. The complexity of the interwoven electronics following the drop is quite a spectacle and proves to be a very satisfying climax to the building energy which leads up to that point. Two very solid cut here and you can’t really go wrong with either one. Great to Ryan with a release on MNL and it goes down as another top notch release for the Manual Music offshoot.
