The 44th release on Paul Hazendonk’s MNL imprint sees the return of Sandji to the label. The Dutch producer’s career began in 2008 with a string of releases on Proton’s Particles imprint. Those early productions forged the blueprint for what is still prevalent in Sandji’s music today; tightly constructed grooves and delicate melodic themes. A deeper variation of this was later showcased on A Must Have and more recently MNL. The Dutch producer’s first release on the Manual offshoot was a funky blend of tech house and wispy atmospheric hooks. Sandji’s follow up single for the label is entitled ‘Mr. Moodswing’ and it comes with remix from Micrologue.
With ‘Mr. Moodswing’ Sandji continues to explore various realms of the sonic spectrum. It’s unique beat patterns along with a funky groove lays down a great foundation early on. The evolving key sequences are pristinely produced and quite playful in nature which makes for an incredibly catchy listen. What might be the icing on the cake though are the sparsely placed pianos. Undeniably classy and also quite heartfelt they add much depth to the already glowing production. Great stuff from Sandji.
The lone remix is provided Micrologue who is making his first appearance on MNL. The German producer has had two very strong outings on Inlab Recordings in 2014 and has also appeared on Soundteller Records and Grrreat Recordings. Micrologue’s ‘Mr. Moodswing’ interpretation has been a staple of our Hype Charts in recent weeks and with good reason as it’s a great alternative to Sandji’s excellent original. Based around a slightly stripped down groove Micrologue has reinvented the emotional content of the record into something that is very special. Blissful atmospheric swells and shimmering keys combine for what is sure to be a goosebump inducing dance floor moment. An exceptional remix and one of the standouts in Micrologue’s discography. Both versions here are top notch and make for one of the best MNL releases of the year.
