Silvio Gutierrez – Empty Minds (Balkan Connection)

Balkan Connection’s 258th release features the return of Silvio Gutierrez to the label. The Argentinean producer has been enjoying a great 2013 with strong releases on Mistique, Clinique and OLD SQL. Silvio’s ‘Personal Illusion’ was included on Balkan Connection’s ‘Connections XI’ compilation which was released in April of this year. Silvio’s first single for Balkan Connection is entitled ‘Empty Minds’ and it comes with remixes from Rikesto and Senores Funkees.

Silvio’s original is a deep and chunky progressive track that would have to be his best work to date. The hypnotic rhythms are truly outstanding here and give the framework some immense swing. Additional vocal elements and wispy atmospheres add nicely to the wicked groove but what’s so great about it is that it doesn’t try to get too big or do too much. The groove is so strong that it doesn’t need to be big and overblown, amazing work from Silvio. The first remix comes from Rikesto who is making his ninth appearance on Balkan Connection. The Colombian producer has enjoyed great success since being announced as one of the finalists in the Guy J / Bedrock remix contest. His remix on Praveen Achary’s Juicebox Music was a real standout and it’s clear he’s slowed down his production output somewhat to really focus on quality material. For his ‘Empty Minds’ remix Rikesto has provided an ideal tech house infused complement to Silvio’s deeper original. The additional drums add a sizable amount of dance floor energy and with a cool twist on the hypnotic elements it’s really tailor made for a wicked dance floor experience. Great stuff from Rikesto. The final remix on the release is provided by Senores Funkees. The Serbian duo is making their third appearance on Balkan Connection and also had an EP on BC’s Tech division in July. For their ‘Empty Minds’ remix Senores Funkees have a deep and spacey sounding interpretation that comes with a wonderfully hazy atmosphere. The record ultimately peaks with a tension inducing tone during the tracks second act. It gives way for the warm atmospheric back drop which then also gets stripped in favour of just the drummy groove which on its own would carry quite a bit of weight on the dance floor. A great warmup production for Senores Funkees and a top notch release from Balkan Connection.
