Stage Van H – Just The Beginning (JustMovement)

The second release on JustMovement features the labels first LP and it comes from none other than Stage Van H. The Dutch/Greek producer has been a fixture of the electronic music underground since the early nineties and has also been one of Movement Recordings resident artists. His debut LP is not only long awaited but also much anticipated as it showcases the Greek (but Dutch born) producer’s versatile studio skills perfectly. The quality and variation that Stage has crafted on ‘Just The Beginning’ is truly exceptional.

The broken beats, shimmering atmospheres and soft vocal swells presented in the LP’s first cut ‘Elements of Life’ are the perfect segway to the punchy breakbeat inspired ‘Savanah’. You can gradually hear the collection building towards the dance floor with ‘Amazing Gipsy’ which is a mid-tempo musical piece that really stands out here. This appropriately leads to the driving beats of ‘Daydreaming’ which carve out a wonderful hypnotic groove that’s rich in atmosphere and warm, sea-side vibes. One of Stage’s primary collaborators has been fellow countryman Rogier so it seems appropriate that the duos remix of Mr. Fluff’s ‘Backside Heelflip’ is included here. It’s shuffling grooves and wispy backdrop seamlessly flow from ‘Daydreaming’ and set the stage for another one of the collections most well received constructions ‘Time is on my Hands’. With it being not only one of the most contemporary sounding productions but also most dance floor worthy ‘Time is on my Hands’ seems to drop at exactly the right moment. It leads to the uptempo melodic piece ‘Rainfall’s’ which casts a heartfelt vibe over the collection and might in fact be its most emotionally gripping composition. The album begins to wind down with ‘Flughaven’ which was produced in conjunction with fellow Movement resident W&DY. The mid-tempo beats, vibrant percussion and airy atmospherics are a breath of fresh air in today’s over produced spectrum of electronic music. The album concludes with the Jan Gaines edit of ‘Findalike’ which is laced with bouncy beats, smooth rhythms and fresh hypnotic lines that just leave you wanting more. This classy collection of tracks more than shows that Stage has been an integral part of the electronic music underground not only in his home country of Greece but also worldwide. ‘Just The Beginning’ showcases Stage Van H’s inspiring take on dance music and leaves us hoping that much more is around the corner from this excellent producer.
