Sterbai – Crazy Things (Troika Records)

The fifth release on Troika Records find label boss Sterbai back in the spotlight with a new single.

Sterbai - Crazy Things

The Scottish producer launched his newly formed imprint in April of this year. The labels second release, Sterbai’s own ‘Minerals’ proved to be its most successful earning two plays (in consecutive weeks) by Above & Beyond on their hugely popular Group Therapy show. Sterbai now returns to his home imprint with a new single entitled ‘Crazy Things’ alongside a remix from Tim Penner.

The original mix begins with a deep, pulsating groove that’s sets a smooth hypnotic vibe straight away. Indistinct atmospheres carry the track and build tension before a very distinctive vocal sample is introduced. An up for it dance floor is sure to eat this up and the offset claps which follow are excellent. The looping story board brings the track to a stripped down middle section where a wonderful dub motif is unleashed. It’s makes for a strong third act where the recurring vocal elements and dubby rhythms play of each other perfectly. Huge work from Sterbai.

The lone interpretation of ‘Crazy Things’ is provided by Tim Penner who is making his debut appearance on Troika Records. A regular in the sets of Hernan Cattaneo, the Canadian producer has had a strong year production-wise with a remix of Max Graham’s ‘Redemption’ being one of the highlights. Also quite accomplished as a DJ, Tim has shared the stage with Hernan Cattaneo, Eric Prydz, Guy J, Henry Saiz and many other top international talents. His time logged behind the decks has certainly served him well in the studio as all his productions seem to come with a keen nose for the dance floor. His ‘Crazy Things’ interpretation is no different and rounds out the release on a strong note with a deeper and dubbier techno vibe. The clattering percs and meticulously processed electronics are immediately striking as the mix gets underway, and before long your completely engulfed in its cavernous groove. Tim’s used the vocal elements sparingly and relied on an array of cutting edge design and the great rhythmic elements from the original to create a stellar vibe. My favourite of the two mixes here and once again proves Tim is adept at conquering a wide range of styles. Excellent release from Troika Records. Don’t miss it.
