Viva Acid and Dance Mania Legends host the landmark Ghetto House event at Chicago’s Avondale Music Hall on Saturday, 18 April 2026.
The Viva Acid gathering serves as both a celebration of the genre’s global influence and is a direct response to the systemic inequities facing the Black electronic music innovators who built the sound.
The annual event traces a sonic trajectory that began in the late 1980s. By the mid-90s, Ghetto House had solidified into a high-energy, stripped-back movement that laid the technical and aesthetic groundwork for today’s global Juke scenes. This event represents one of the largest assemblies of the genre’s artists on a single stage, offering a rare look at the living history of the movement.
A core focus of the collaboration is the restoration of credit to artists who have seen limited compensation despite their creative impact. The lineup includes performances from four vocalists, including Tish Bailey, whose work is synonymous with the Ghetto House sound yet frequently remains uncredited on major recordings.
Give us our flowers while we’re alive. Support the artists who created this music while they’re here. When we do events, release music, and sell merch, that support helps keep this culture alive and allows the people who built it to continue creating.
DJ Slugo’s sentiment underscores the event’s broader mission: moving beyond nostalgia to provide tangible support for creators. This advocacy extends into the Viva Acid sixth annual summit, scheduled for 1-4 October 2026. That multi-day programme will shift from the dancefloor to the classroom, featuring workshops on music production, financial planning, and healthcare access, specifically designed to navigate the structural barriers within the industry.
The April showcase acts as a precursor to these deeper discussions, functioning as a historic reunion for the Dance Mania roster. As the sound continues to evolve through contemporary performers, the night remains rooted in the recognition of over 31 years of influence. It is a necessary act of cultural preservation, ensuring that the innovators behind Chicago’s most raw electronic export receive the professional acknowledgment their work has earned.
