Matt Davis – Solar Flares (Stripped Off)

Matt Davis makes his debut on Stripped Off with ‘Solar Flares’, backed by a fantastic remix from Stripped regular Drogo.

Matt Davis is a relatively new name on the scene, but ‘Solar Flares’ seems destined to win him a bunch of new followers. The core of the track is a stabbing, hypnotic bassline and gorgeously techy sweeps, and Matt Davis fills out the track with urgent bleeps, rippling melodies, and rising pads. Driving and with just enough melodic touches, this really hits the spot.

Adam Kent released a really interesting EP on Pro-B-Tech last year, and under his Drogo moniker he’s provided some pretty weird and wonderful music for Stripped over the past 6 months. His interpretation of Matt Davis’s track is probably his best piece of work to date. It’s richly atmospheric dub-techno that never jumps out and grabs the listener, but gradually lures them in with intensifying metallic sounds and handclaps reverberating around over a taut bassline. The elements of the original are used brilliantly, with the sequence that starts about halfway through utilising Matt Davis’s pulsing stabs really well, and those rippling synths bubbling up periodically, adding texture and intensity. This is subtle but stunning work from Drogo.

Both Matt Davis’s original and Drogo’s remix work well for me on this release, but there’s definitely something a bit special about the remix – great stuff from Stripped Off!
