Alejandro Arroyo speaks to Ramiro Lopez, a man whose career just keeps on rising. With releases on Bedrock, SCI+TEC and Suara under his belt he’s definitely a person on our one to watch list.

The Spanish scene has started to become really popular. Who are you connected with?

Ramiro Lopez: First of all, my regards to all the Change-Underground followers and thanks to the team for giving me the chance to get people know me in depth.

The Spanish scene is going through a very nice moment and there lots of Spanish artists getting the recognition they deserve around the world. It’s always a pleasure to see a fellow countryman accomplishing his dreams. I have good relations with most of my colleagues but Coyu and AFFKT are the two main Spanish artists that had been the most influential in my career and whom I’d shared more.

You’re appeared on Suara many times. Do you have a role at the label? 

I’m deeply linked with Suara even though my function is only related with being an Artist. It’s my favourite label, headed up by a good friend and think that is one of the labels that is in best shape in the moment among the whole scene.

Tell us how about the underground in your country and specifically in your city?

Spain has a lot of consolidated clubs and festivals with huge experience. There is a good amount of people supporting underground music. Above all of this, in the summer, Ibiza becomes the global headquarters for electronic music.

I’m from Madrilejos, a town from Toledo in the center of Spain. It’s tiny and there isn’t any electronic music club but in the Toledo area there’s a national well known club with a strong schedule. It’s called “Family Club” (I was the resident Dj there for 3 years)

As an artist, i’m always interested to know how other artists keep themselves creative and which things inspire them. Tell us three attitudes, situations, or things that lead you to a creative process.

Music is 24/7 in my life and almost any situation can awake my inspiration. A sound from the street, the soundtrack of a movie, the music from the gym… also I try to search inspiration more directly. I love to hear music from artists I appreciate and which I feel identified. Always have my cellphone near to record some voice notes when i’m not at the studio.

I believe i’m in the best moment of my career so far and with a huge projection. Every day i’m getting more support. I have my ideas and objectives very clear and feel totally happy with what i’m doing. Also i’m working with a super professional team that helps me to do things even better.

What’s in store on the gig front?

For me every show is important and i like to get prepared for everyone. Through this summer I have a good amount of dates that make me feel pretty excited like the Suara Parties at Booom Ibiza or the Dreambeach Festival in August.

Which styles apart from electronic music had been inspiring or had interesting elements that you could adaptate into your music?

I’m engaged with a lot of styles of music outside electronic. Jazz and Bossa Nova are the styles I most like to hear when i’m not at the studio.

I also liked Hip Hop and R&B. Sometimes I use vocal samples from those styles in my productions.
Rock and Heavy metal are also on the list. In fact i feel that Heavy Metal has some similarities with techno.

Which values do you look for when working with new people?

First of all we must share similar musical concerns, also i have to like and admire his work and that has to be reciprocal. Then at the studio we need to have a natural feeling so we both understand us well and keep things fluent.

I’m lucky enough to say that i have a relation further than just professional with the artists i had collaborate. Sharing things outside the music also helps to create a better ambient and work results are better.

You must have got to know a lot of people to get to where you have. Could you share with us the names of some new talents you’re enjoying at the moment?

One of the things i most like about this job is the possibility to travel and get to know and share with new people. Regarding the new talents in my country, I had to say that there are a lot and each one is very good. Some names are appearing in my head now but i don’t want to highlight nobody because i don’t want to forget anyone. Every time there are more spanish artists that find their spot and i love that.

Ramiro López se mantiene cosechando deliciosos frutos en una carrera que no deja de subir. Hace poco coronó el proceso con un EP a través de Bedrock y un tremendo lanzamiento con la placa de Dubfire, SCI+TEC. Definitivamente, un nombre que merece atención en la escena Techno / Tech House

Parece ser que los artistas Españoles se han potenciado mucho en el último tiempo. Cómo has vivido eso? Quiénes son tus compañeros de vida en tu carrera musical?

Ramiro Lopez : Primero de todo, Saludos a todos los seguidores de Change – Underground y muchas gracias a vosotros por darme la oportunidad de darme a conocer un poco más.

Sinceramente creo que es así. La escena española pasa por muy buen momento y son muchos artistas españoles con gran repercusión fuera de nuestro país. Siempre me alegra ver que un artista español obtiene reconocimiento y éxito a nivel internacional. Tengo buena relación con la mayoría de mis compañeros pero Coyu y affkt son dos de los artistas españoles más influyentes en mi carrera y con los que más cosas comparto.

Eres un miembro muy activo dentro de Suara. Qué papel juegas en el label? Eres solo artista o también te dedicas a otras áreas?

Estoy muy vinculado a Suara aunque mi función no va más allá que la de Artista. Es mi label favorito, lo dirige un buen amigo y es uno de los sellos más en forma del panorama electrónico.
Es un honor poder formar parte de esta gran familia gatuna y que se me conozca como tal. Meeow!

Me gustaría conocer más de la escena underground Española. Cómo se vive esta cultura en tu país y específicamente en tu ciudad?

España tiene muchos clubs y festivales consolidados y con una gran experiencia. Hay bastantes seguidores de electrónica Underground. Además Ibiza en verano se convierte en el epicentro de la electrónica mundial.

Yo soy de Madridejos, un pueblo de Toledo en el centro de España. Es pequeño y no hay ningún club de electrónica pero en el area de Toledo hay un club bastante famoso a nivel nacional con una programación muy potente. Se llama Family Club. (Por cierto, fui DJ residente de ese Club durante 3 años).

Como artista, me interesa conocer cómo otros artistas se mantienen creativos y qué cosas los inspiran. Cuéntanos tres actitudes, situaciones, cosas que te llevan al proceso creativo.

Tengo la música presente 24/7 y cualquier situación puede despertarme la inspiración. Un sonido de la calle, La banda sonora de una pelicula, el hilo musical del gym… Aunque también busco la inspiración de una forma más directa. Escucho mucha música de otros artistas que me gustan y sobre todo muchos sets/podcast de artistas y sellos con los que me siento indentificado. Siempre llevo mi teléfono conmigo para tomar notas de voz sobre ideas si no estoy en el estudio.

Qué momento de tu carrera crees que estás viviendo hoy? Cómo te proyectas en el futuro?

Creo que estoy en el mejor momento de mi carrera hasta la fecha y con una gran proyección. Estoy obteniendo cada vez más support , Tengo las ideas y objetivos muy claros y me siento muy a gusto con lo que hago. Además me estoy rodeando de un equipo de trabajo super profesional que me ayuda a que todo vaya aún mejor.

Tienes algún próximo show para el que te estés preparando? 

Para mi cada Show es importante y me gusta prepararme para todos. Este verano tengo varias fechas que me hacen especial ilusión, como las actuaciones en las Suara Parties en Booom Ibiza o el festival Dreambeach en Agosto.

Qué estilos fuera de la electrónica han sido inspiradores o tienen elementos interesantes que has podido integrar a tu música?

En realidad me gustan muchos estilos musicales fuera de la electrónica. El Jazz en todas sus vertientes, la Bossa Nova son estilos que me gusta escuchar cuando no estoy en el estudio. Siempre que estoy cocinando, me gusta ponerme la radio de fondo y escucharlo.

Me gusta también en Hip Hop, el R&B , incluso a veces utilizo samples vocales de estos estilos en mis producciones.  También me gusta el Rock y el heavy Metal y encuentro algunas similitudes de éste ultimo con el techno.

Qué valores buscas en las personas con las que quieres trabajar?

Primero que compartamos similares inquietudes musicales, que me guste y admire su trabajo y que esto sea recíproco. Luego que haya feeling a la hora de trabajar, que nos entendamos bien y todo sea fluido.

Tengo la suerte de tener una relación más allá de lo profesional con los artistas que he colaborado. Compartir cosas fuera de la música también ayuda a que el trabajo salga mejor.

De seguro todo este camino te ha llevado a conocer mucha gente. Podrías destacar un nuevo talento de tu país?

Ramiro Lopez: Una de las cosas por las que más me gusta este trabajo es por la posibilidad de poder viajar y conocer a muchisima gente nueva. En cuanto a talentos en mi país, he de decir que hay muchos y muy buenos. Se me vienen a la cabeza varios nombres pero no destacaré ninguno ya que no quiero olvidarme a nadie. Cada vez hay más artistas españoles que encuentran su hueco y eso me encanta.
