EMCPLAY 2018 announces first event Rio Revel w/ Sasha, Greg Wilson & more

Electronic Music Conference (EMC) today announces its first event for EMCPLAY 2018 and what a cracker it is. On Saturday 17 November, Return To Rio will be bringing a taste of the music, magic, and mayhem the festival’s become famous for to Sydney.

This exclusive show will feature SASHA (playing a three-hour set) alongside progressive maestro, Cid Inc, and Rio favourite – Hoj (All Day I dream). Disco lovers haven’t been forgotten: Greg Wilson will be hosting his Credit To The Edit stage with the one and only, Late Nite Tuff Guy, The Owl, plus a secret super-star guest.

Introducing the Rio Revel…
Revel (verb):
1. To engage in mischievous festivities.
2. To indulge in extreme pleasure and delight.
3. Enjoying yourself in a lively way (especially with drinking & dancing).

“We couldn’t be more thrilled that The Rio Revel is happening on Saturday 17 November as a part of EMCPLAY’s new format. To have such legendary artists performing at an indoor/outdoor event on a summer afternoon and evening in Sydney is the perfect celebration of electronic music excellence. I know that I for one will be planting myself on that dancefloor at The Rio Revel!” EMC Executive Producer Jane Slingo said.

“We are backing it up from the ‘ultimate weekend away’ to throw an almighty shindig in the centre of Sydney. It will be a chance for music fans who missed the chance to catch extended sets from these legendary artists at Return to Rio experience a sprinkling of the magic at the Rio Revel. The Riopians will be out in force and with indoor and outdoor stages it’s primed to be one of the summer’s biggest electronic music extravaganzas.” Richard Cooper, Chief Mischief Maker, Return to Rio said.

EMC moves to a new home in 2018 – the Frank Gehry designed, multi-award winning Dr Chau Chak Wing Building at UTS in Ultimo. Mind-blowing outside and inside, this landmark building’s unique design is a physical manifestation of the innovative thinking that underpins the UTS Business School. Besides the building’s 5 Star Green Star Design rating certified by the Green Building Council of Australia, the Dr Chau Chak Wing Building has a state of the art auditorium and multiple breakout spaces including 360 engagement spaces, providing the perfect home for EMC’s new conference program format. The 2018 conference program features a two-day keynote program and four additional streams of content focusing on Tech and Digital, an Artists & Managers Hub, Events & Touring and EMC Studio which hosts two days of workshops and masterclasses dedicated to music creation.

EMC welcomes back triple j Unearthed Music Director Dave Ruby Howe as EMCPLAY LIVE programmer. One of Australia’s most respected programmers, Dave has a proven track record of pin pointing the emerging artists that go onto long and thriving careers domestically and in many cases, internationally.

“Dave Ruby Howe has some kind of special magic in his ears, he is an absolute authority on picking the artists to watch in the coming 12 months. He is the perfect programmer for EMCPLAY LIVE and we couldn’t be more thrilled to have him back as EMCPLAY LIVE programmer in 2018.” said EMC Executive Producer Jane Slingo.

“It’s a pleasure to be able to work with the EMC team on another live instalment for this year, especially when the calibre of local acts around right now feels so strong. If you throw out an opportunity like this for emerging artists to showcase in front of the industry you get to see both talent and passion for creating exciting new electronic music come together so damn well. Putting together the lineup puzzle is like completing a Rubik’s Cube with sounds and genres on each side, but I’m keen to line up something special for 2018.” Dave Ruby Howe said

In 2018 Artists can apply to showcase at EMCPLAY and promoters, labels, agencies and collectives can also apply to Host an EMCPLAY event from Friday 16 November to Sunday 18 November. Artist and Host applications are open now. Artist applications close 11:59pm (AEST) Friday 7 September and Host applications close 11:59pm Wednesday 12 September. EMC’s 2018 theme is THE FUTURE OF YESTERDAY. At a time when as an industry we are more future focussed than ever before with constant disruption, tech developments, big data and analytics, AI, VR, blockchain and more, EMC’s 2018 theme reflects the reality that despite our future focus, we are always looking back to the traditional business models of the past to learn from the shortfalls and errors, and to work towards a brighter future in the music business which offers a fairer playing field for all involved, be they music creators or music businesses. Musically – especially in electronic music which has a DNA embedded in sample based culture – we are forever referencing past sounds and past genres – reworking, remixing and refurnishing nostalgic sounds of yesteryear in a contemporary take for today. EMC’s THE FUTURE OF YESTERDAY theme will also pay homage to some of the most golden years in electronic and dance music from the last three decades – 1988; 1998; 2008.

With over 100 speakers contributing to EMC 2018, there are many more inspirational pioneers and figures yet to be announced.
