Julian Dep – Structural Depth (System Recordings)

The latest release on System Recordings welcomes Julian Dep back to the label for a brand new single entitled ‘Structural Depth’.

Julian Dep - Structural Depth

The Argentinean producer last appeared on the US imprint with a remix of Luciano Scheffer’s ‘Time Solves’ released earlier this month. Julian now presents his debut single for the label alongside a remix from the always reliable Ewan Rill.

For those that heard Julian’s ‘Time Solves’ remix you know he completely transformed the track into a unique and quirky piece of dance floor funk. It’s was a departure from what he’d done in the past and was a great complement to the other mixes included there. On ‘Structural Depth’ we see more of Julian’s ever growing versatility. Following an intro of DJ friendly beats and feathered electronics a swirling sonic sweep transitions the piece into a more timeless mood with soft tones and playful melodic hooks. This carries the track through its first act with several one off synth fills further tantalizing the senses. The main break sees a broken beat transition along with the introduction of another underlying theme. The third act culminates with some acid-like textures and a much bigger atmospheric presence which certainly lifts the track a few notches higher. There are enough good ideas over the nine minute running for several tracks and Julian has made them all work together here quite nicely. Well done.

The lone interpretation of ‘Structural Depth’ is provided by Ewan Rill who is making his first appearance on System Recordings. The Russian producer and Sever Records label boss is fresh off a remix of Silinder’s ’21:21′ released courtesy of Balkan Connection as well as an EP for John OO Fleming’s JOOF Recordings. For his ‘Structural Depth’ interpretation Ewan has brought the track much closer to a contemporary dance floor with a reshaped and fluid sounding groove. The countless hooks and themes from Julian’s original have been incorporated quite nicely, albeit in a much subtler manner. It’s energetic drive and massive third act are it’s strongest suits and it not only closes the release out on a huge note but might be one of Ewan’s biggest remixes this year. Excellent stuff from Ewan and a top notch release from System Recordings. Don’t miss it.
