12 Questions Episode 44: Magnetic Brothers

The 44th episode of our 12 Questions segment features Anton and Arthur Golubev aka Magnetic Brothers.

12 questions, magnetic brothers,

1. If you had to pick one track which solidified your love for electronic music early on what would it be?

Anton: In my childhood in UA was many great music all around but it was mostly rock music because my father is rock musician, so ‘Depeche Mode – Personal Jesus’  showed the door to the world of electronic music.

Arthur:  I’m younger brother and my first track was ‘The Egg – Walking Away (Tocadisco Remix)’ Actually I was a big fan of reggae and hip hop music. But when I had heard this one I got some interest to this music at all.

2. What was your first and last DJ gig?

Anton: The first our gig as DJs was in the Crimea. It was summer open air GIG. there was a lot of fun. Many happy people and a lot of hot house and techno  music that’s what we wanted. I love those days  and feel some nostalgia.

Arthur: And the last gig was in Novokuznetsk City. It  was a big open air party with 3 big rooms.  And we were happy to be the part of that atmosphere.  ‘Kuzbass’  people brought their love to underground electronic music and we melted with them in the night.

3. What was the first and last record you purchased?

Anton In the early 90th in UA all people made re-recordings from tape to tape, because the license records with good music was hard to get.  But I remember when the new CD and cassette shop was opened and I purchased license cassette with Metallica “Load” album.

Arthur: And I had gotten a cassette with ‘Nirvana’  that day. And we listened both new ones many days . Then we had gotten  our first CD, It was album of ‘Bon Jovi’. Thanks to our sister, she was a big fan of this band and she advised us to get it.

4. What would you say is the highlight of your career thus far?

Arthur:  The highlight of our career all this time was a diligent work with our music when we tell about our thoughts, feelings,  emotions, life stories.

AntonWe had never  made track for the track. All music we’ve created is honest for us and from us to the people who listen to it.

5. Tell us something about yourself that might surprise people?

Anton: Sometimes I want to stop with music and return to painting art. Before I started to create the music I had some success in painting for myself. That was my best and most loved way to create a new canvas with morning view to the nature around me.

Arthur: I am a professional humorist. When I was a student always get a part in ‘KVN’ festival. I had a comic team called ‘Griboedov’ . That’s why when I out of music parties I’m on the comedian gigs.

6. Who are some of the best undiscovered talents in your eyes?

Anton:  As Me and Arthur think  everyone has a talent if he has serious look on his way or things he want to create. Every year we can watch for new names on underground scene such as Stas Drive, Loquai, Tvardovsky, Hugo Ibarra & Uvo. All these guys are very talented and they are on right way. This year we can say about the guy from UA and his project is called ‘Following Light’ that it is the best undiscovered talent. But we can miss some other names whom we think as the one of the best talent .

7. Which producers consistently inspire you?

Anton: There are a lot of great people from music business  who help us to get new look. It depends on case. So sometimes it can be the music from 70th, some funk or jazz stage. Or certain producer from nowadays, f.e. I love music from Guy J and his label ‘lost & found’,  Hernan Cattaneo and ‘Sudbeat’ . Robert Babicz or Darin Epsilon with his ‘Perspectives  Digital’. microCastle’s production with the leader of this great label Mitch Alexander. I can talk about producers and labels for a long time especially about nonmainstream producers, because I love all interesting production. Sometimes I can meet  producers for inspiring when I get a promo from Suffused Music or Balkan Connection family. Just love you all guys!

8. What artist or track would you love to remix? And who would you love to be remixed by?

Anton:  I think Arthur would be agree with me we’d love to remix ‘Robert Babicz – Sonntag’. It’s a really legendary track for us.

Arthur: And we’d be happy to be remixed by this guy from Cologne too, I mean Robert Babicz for sure.

9. Record labels are a dime a dozen these days and the majority of people feel most of them are mediocre music factories. Which ones if any standout for you?

Arthur: As Anton told earlier there are many really great record  labels. We mostly love labels which working hard for the way forward. Who can surprise us with the new EP or artist on board. And production should has some soul. Not only inside box thoughtless sounds and algorithms especially on the top of music. We prefer intelligent sound or some really beautiful melodies in production of record labels.

10. What would you say is the best mix compilation of all time?

Anton:  Really hard question! But the 1st I have in my mind is a ‘Balance Presents Guy J’. But I know that I love many works from different producers.
