The 54th episode of our 12 Questions segment features producer Ronfoller.
1. If you had to pick one track which solidified your love for electronic music early on what would it be?
Ronfoller: I think the first electronic music tracks that became my favorite were those made by Propellerheads, Chemical Brothers, Aphrodite, Prodigy, Crystal Method, Fatboy Slim and others. I was listening to the break beat and big beat from the end of 90’s. If we talk about one most favorite, that can be Prodigy’s “Smack My Bitch Up” 🙂
2. What was your first and last DJ gig?
Ronfoller: I regularly play in clubs and lounges in my home town and, actually, both were here. My first performance as a professional dj was on 28th of November 2004-that was “Student Sunday” event-in one of the best clubs at that time in Baku. The latest gig was again in Baku last week.
3. What was the first and last record you purchased?
Ronfoller: That was Michael Jackson’s History (1995) album in 1997. I’m still a big fan of his music. As for the last one – it’s Dire Straits – Greatest Hits. Giving me inspiration
4. What would you say is the highlight of your career thus far?
Ronfoller: Actually, I would say that since 2007 there have been some fluctuations that can be called so. However, the real highlight started in the beginning of 2014. I started to produce again my works after a big pause from 2009 and many releases are coming soon! At the same time, it should be mentioned that the period 2007-2009 was quite productive – I had plenty of gigs and performances at that period in my home country, but only as a dj, not as a music producer.
5. Tell us something about yourself that might surprise people?
Ronfoller: I believe the fact that before getting involved into the musical area I had never studied music) The inspiration has always been coming from rock, funk and classical music. I love the genres and I’m really keen on funk! Love to paint, animals and nature that also often are sources of inspiration for me.
6. Who are some of the best undiscovered talents in your eyes?
Ronfoller: I can’t really say they are undiscovered at all. But I wish them to be more widely recognized -I like their production. That’s Electric Calm, Deep Sound Effect, George Effe, Joal and others.
7. Which producers consistently inspire you?
Ronfoller: A lot of them. And many of them are from Germany. I’m inspired by Mihai Popoviciu, Guy J, Spirit Catcher, Lulu Rouge, Trentemoller, Kollektiv Turmstrasse, Miguel Migs, Maceo Plex, Eelke Kleijn and many others- they make quality music, in my opinion.
8. What artist or track would you love to remix? and who would you love to be remixed by?
Ronfoller: I can not name the particular track because I get many ideas about making remixes when listening to music, that is during the process. However, I prefer to remix vocal tracks. It’s a special pleasure to work with vocals for me. As for my work, I would love to be remixed by Blood Groove & Kikis. They are really cool! Also such artists as Mihai Popoviciu, Lulu Rouge, Embliss, Evren Furtuna, Claes Rosen, Dousk and many other deep, progressive and tech house producers.
9. Record labels are a dime a dozen these days and the majority of people feel most of them are mediocre music factories. Which ones if any standout for you?
Ronfoller: Yes,many labels are underestimated in the world today. Those special for me are Innervisions, Kompakt, Compost, Bedrock, Soma, Permanent Vacation, Diynamic Music, 2020 Vision, Soundteller, microCastle, Spring Tube, Lost & Found and many others.
10. What would you say is the best mix compilation of all time?
