Sleepless Nights Recordings returns this week for their 22nd overall release and an exciting new collaborative project. Canadian producer Biologik met Irish producers Shane Robinson and Silinder on a trip to Dublin where he performed live with the Sleepless Nights owners Soulfinder and Vincent Furlong. Not long after that Biologik and Shane began their first ever collaboration together. The end result was a melodic beauty appropriately titled ‘Dublin’ which now sees its release alongside remixes from Soulfinder & Vincent Furlong and Silinder.
The growling acidic underbelly of the original lays down a timeless techno sensibility to lead the release off. Tough beats, charging drums and a windswept soundscape build a sizable amount of energy and atmosphere as the track begins progressing. As the acid modulation gets cranked up soulful vocal wails and a nice complement of sparkling melodies fades into the foreground for what is a truly epic moment in the record. I would never imagine a semi-tweaked acid line working so well with such soft harmonic sheets and glimmering keys but it’s absolute magic here. Amazing collaboration from Biologik and Shane, let’s hope we see a follow-up soon!
The first remix is supplied by the Sleepless Nights label bosses Soulfinder & Vincent Furlong. The Irish duo have collaborated once in the past on their remix for Dmitry Molosh’s ‘SMPG’ which was released in May of 2013. The results there were quite exceptional and they’ve worked some serious magic on ‘Dublin’ as well. The duos radically revamped foundation is full of romping, sonic-funk and the complement of sleek electronics is pure aural magic. The main musical themes from the original are also well conveyed here and the end result is a softer, more serene construction with the acidic elements being much less prevalent. It’s a great alternative to the original and it also begs to ask why we haven’t heard a collaborative single or EP from these two yet?
The second and final remix on the release comes from Gav Mulhall aka Silinder who is making his second appearance on Sleepless Nights. The Irish producer masterfully reworked Biologik’s ‘Skin’ for the label back in October of 2013 and it made perfect sense to have him involved on this project as well. For his ‘Dublin’ interpretation Silinder has provided a laid back, intricately tailored rework of the massive original. With a vibrant framework that’s adorned with trippy metallic’s, soft vocal pads and smooth harmonic swells it’s not only the headiest version on the release but also one of Gav’s most refined studio creations to date. Sleepless Nights is one label that never seems to waver with the quality of their releases. Each one is equal to or supersedes its predecessor and this one is bang on the money again. Don’t miss it.
