Marcelo Vasami – Smoog (Moonchild Records)

Sotela’s Moonchild Records returns this week with a huge release after a long four month break. The Costa Rica based imprint has put together their most impressive release to date here. It finds Marcelo Vasami making his debut on the label with ‘Smoog’ which is accompanied with remixes from: Deepfunk, Mariano Favre and Sotela & Javier Portilla.

Marcelo’s original lays down a great vibe early with a well textured foundation and smooth hypnotic rhythms. The groove and atmosphere build nicely throughout the tracks more than 10 minute running length and the haunting vocal pads add a wonderful touch. First up on the remixes Deepfunk provides what is one of his coolest works to date. The Maltese producer’s sound is certainly evolving and it shows here with a distinctly deeper and more organic sounding rework that is our favourite on the package. The second remix comes from Argentina’s Mariano Farve who has been quiet this year with just two releases on Stripped and Mistique. He provides a more progressive flavoured mix that is rich in hypnotic rhythms and harmony. Some clever hooks and emotional chord changes are the real highlights and we think it’s Mariano’s best work to date as well. The package is closed out with Moonchild label owner Sotela teaming up with Javier Portilla. The two worked together in the past on their ‘Scallywag’ original and their remix here puts a great cap on the release. The pair’s rumbling groove comes with some serious punch and the atmosphere on the piece is quite intoxicating. Superb work from Sotela and Javier and a top notch release from Moonchild which is their best to date. Highly Recommended. Release Promo Hype Chart #1
