Missus – Calypso (Soundteller Records)

Deersky’s Soundteller Records returns this week with a brand new EP from rising star Missus.

Jason Delgado aka Missus was born in Minsk, Belarus but now calls Barcelona, Spain home. After being influenced by the sounds of Guy J, Guy Mantzur, Khen, Eric Prydz and Markus Schulz, Jason took to DJing quickly, winning a Pioneer branded competition at the age of 18. His first ever release came just 4 months ago on Antrim’s Or Two Strangers imprint which he followed with a contribution to Soundteller’s ‘Winter Sampler 2017’. Now returning to the label for his first EP Missus presents the three track offering ‘Calypso’.

Although it’s quite short, a quick look over the Missus discography shows some really nice versatility which also comes through on this EP. The title cut ‘Calypso’ is quite techno inspired at the outset with a deliberate, driving groove and waves of clattering drums. As it progresses it becomes increasingly hypnotic with airy motifs that sound a touch Holden-esque. Vocally stabs stand out with their unique flair and ultimately carry the track into break. Here the melodic content comes to full fruition with escalating tension and euphoric lines taking you home.

Both the second and third tracks come in a bit deeper but with the same wondrous sound profile. ‘Dancing in the Moonlight’ is a chunky, melodic delight with familiar arps and gorgeous tones. Progression and some wicked modulation brings the break to a tense yet exhilarating moment before a warm rush of beats and drums steals the show.

The release concludes with ‘When Everything Is Lost’ which is perhaps the most poignant of the three. There’s a deeper emotion explored here, which after a smooth, galloping first act, plays out perfectly over a near two minute break. Bound for several goosebump moments the finale is strong and uplifting, putting a great stamp on the EP and also making you want to hear from Missus. Should be a great 2017 for this new talent and as usual Deersky’s Soundteller Records is one of the first to pick him up. Highly Recommended.
