The latest release on Mistique Music welcomes Rick Pier O’Neil back to the label for a new EP entitled ‘The Confusion’.
It’s been a string of underground hits to start the year for the French producer. Releases on Clinique Recordings, Joof Recordings and Majestic Family have all been stellar and his latest for Mistique looks to be even better.
Rick’s years in the studio and behind the decks have served him well. The moment you put on one of his tunes you’re blown away by its sonic quality. The lead track here ‘Absolute’ once again showcase’s Rick’s unique progressive techno hybrid. It’s rumbling, big room groove is quite menacing early on but an atmospheric calm descends over the track as the main break approaches. These warm textures soon reveal an indistinct motif which should satisfy all the melody freaks out there. A stripped down re-entry brings the heat back momentarily but a serene third act ends the piece on a heavenly note. A nice departure from Rick in a way, the menacing grooves are still prevalent but with a nice emotional sheen.
The companion piece and also the EPs title cut ‘Confusion’ closes the release out very strong. Rick’s rolling rhythms and sonic designs are immediately captivating as the track begins to take shape. Dark stabs and subversive motifs soon surround the menacing groove as the track reaches the break. A soft pad casts a hopeful tone as the track deconstructs itself into a cinematic soundscape. There’s a wonderful calm here but the brooding electronic underbelly begins to shift the mood before a quick build directs the groove back for a big finish. Two massive tracks from Rick and a great release from Michael & Levan and Stiven Rivic’s Mistique Music. Don’t miss it.
