Terje Saether – Blinded / Human Lifestyle (Crossfade Sounds)

Crossfade Sounds returns this week with another exciting debut on the label. Norwegian producer Terje Saether first came to our attention with his early productions on Darkroom Dubs, Frisky Records, Night Drive Music and Underground City Music. Shortly thereafter Terje had three of his originals signed to Nick Warren’s Hope Recordings one of which was remixed by Dutch superstar Eelke Kleijn. The Norwegian producer’s unique blend of Tech House, Deep House and melodic sounds seems like the perfect fit for Crossfade’s Broad music policy. Terje’s debut EP for Crossfade Sounds is entitled ‘Blinded’ and it comes with two brand new originals and remixes from MUUI and Lonya.

For those of you that are fans of Terje’s deeper productions you will absolutely fall in love with the first track on the EP ‘Blinded’. Beginning with an ominous sounding groove that’s accented with a catchy vocal gate and cool atmospheric accents this one grows into a real harmonic masterpiece. Seemingly endless melodic themes and wistful electronics soon surround the framework for one of those rare emotionally grabbing moments in dance music. The main break strips things right down and focuses on a cool vocal sample which flows perfectly though the track as it picks back up for a solid second half finish. An outstanding piece of music from Terje which would have to be considered one of his strongest compositions yet.

The lone remix of ‘Blinded’ comes from MUUI who has been much hyped over the first half of 2013.The Australian producer has appeared on Outside The Box, Spring Tube, Lowbit and Baroque all since the beginning of the year and here he continues on a strong run with a great interpretation of ‘Blindness’. Patrik Carrera aka MUUI is one of the new breed of producers who really defy genre with a lot of their productions. On ‘Blindness’ Patrik opts for a deeper, tech house sound which is rich in texture and groove. The processing on the vocal elements is ear catching to say the least and keep a keen sense of interest while the track builds its atmospheric presence. The smooth groove is totally intoxicating and the sleek electronic accents just add that extra touch of class as the track reaches a tasteful conclusion. Outstanding work.

The second original on the package ‘Human Lifestyle’ comes with an incredibly groovy tech house vibe which complements the deeper ‘Blinded’ really well. A massive set of rolling bass stabs helps make up a deadly groove while fresh sounding electronics add a vibrant mood to the production. Well textured sets of keys and another bang on the money spoken work vocal sample carry the track into a breaky melodic section which sounds like sure fire back room material at its finest. Newly introduced chord changes add a nice emotional element as the track reaches its melodic apex. This in turn creates a wonderful contrast to the funky nature of the record. Top work from Terje and another contemporary dance floor gem no doubt.

The lone remix of ‘Human Lifestyle’ comes from Lonya who is also making his first appearance on Crossfade Sounds but has appeared on sister label Sound Avenue once in the past. Lonya is based in Tel-Aviv and runs the Asymmetric Recordings label, he’s also a resident DJ at the well known The Cat & Dog club in Tel-Aviv. The cutting edge labels Sudbeat, Bpitch and Flow Vinyl appear in his discography and his productions are routinely supported and charted by Hernan Cattaneo. Lonya’s ‘Human Lifestyle’ interpretation comes with a tough, floor friendly groove which is certainly the biggest sounding production on the package. A spacious but bouncy progressive bass line combined with flickering hypnotic elements creates a very vibrant mood which is full of electricity. The tracks strips itself down for the introduction of some killer stabs which will no doubt be very dynamic on the dance floor. The thing many DJs find nowadays is that bigger sounding music tends to lack groove but that couldn’t be further from the truth here. A massive remix from Lonya that has groove for days. We’d have to say this is the best Crossfade Sounds release to date, there is very little to nitpick here on all four tracks and with support from Hernan Cattaneo, Pole Folder, Guy J, Kasey Taylor, Paul Hazendonk, Marc Poppcke, Derek Howell and Darin Epsilon you’d be hard pressed to find a better package than this. Highly recommended. Release Promo Hype Chart Top 25
