#cupremiere | Equal – Renegade (Sungate)

Equal drops a bomb new deep funky techno release on Sungate this week. We bring you the exclusive premiere and grab 5 minutes with the talent Spaniard to chat about the EP.

Tell us about you. How old are you, where are you living and how long have you been producing and Djing?

Equal: My name is David, I’m 30 years old and I live in Mallorca (Spain). I started djing when I was around 18-19 years old and I got into producing 3 years after that.

What made you get in to dance music?

Equal: I got into dance music when I got a job in the nightlife. Working as a PR in a local club called Underclub allowed me to discover electronic music and this opened a whole new world for me. I fell in love with it.

Where was your first gig?

Equal: It was at a friend’s party, in a club from a small town here in Mallorca. We met at Underclub, he was a regular there, and he knew I wanted to get into djing so he offered and I was happy to say yes. I was really nervous but I’ll never forget the vibes I felt that night.

How difficult was learning to produce for you in the beginning?

Equal: At first I felt lost. I’d say the most difficult part for me was doing music that I actually liked. I remember deleting lots of projects in the beginning…haha. But eventually, with time and perseverance, I started to understand the producing world.

Talk to us about your latest release and the inspiration behind it.

Equal: My next release will be under my alias EQUAL and it’s focused on my techno side. It will be published on Sungate, a very interesting newcommer label from my country. I’m really happy to be a part of this project and release my EP right after Eduardo de la Calle (he was Sungate’s 1st reference), one of the icons from the techno scene.

What’s the music scene like where you live and how often are you playing?

Equal: I don’t play a lot in Mallorca, there isn’t a consolidate scene here yet. I should mention Warehouse though, a nice club in Palma, the city I come from. But most of my gigs are in Madrid and around Europe.

Which other DJs or producers are you liking right now?

Equal: That’s a really tough question, I like a lot of producers because I like a lot of different styles. Baltazar, my best friend who’s also from Mallorca, is doing great stuff and he’s releasing his first EP on Mama Recordings. There’s also Orbe, as always, who is releasing bombs in good labels.

What are your go to labels?

Equal: Some labels that I love are Planet E, Delsin and Ostgut, but there are many more. I guess I tend to gravitate towards music that is somewhat influenced by the Detroit or Berlin sound.

Tell us about your DJ setup

Equal: I just use two turntables and two CDJ, that’s it.

What’s been your biggest achievement

I’d say my biggest achievement has been to be able to release music in labels that I admire, and also to get to knowing good people from the music industry.

What can we expect from you soon

I have a few ongoing and upcoming projects using different alias at the moment, but there is a really cool EQUAL & Orbe collaboration coming out soon in a VV.AA. from Stardub.
